Rosaline, Who turned 17 on the day she was arrested, has been best friends with Sarah forever.When Sarah turns on her with a sudden change of heart, she's left with nobody except for a young girl who dies later in the book as she is kidnapped (freaky). Then she starts talking to a boy on the other side of the wall seperating the two jail cells, who is the only being to keep her from going insane in the hell she's been forced into. With jet black hair and ice blue eyes, Rosaline Fuller is the heroine of this story.

Charlie is arrested with his little brother, accused of witchcraft and outraged that two girls the age of his brother could force so much power on his future and fate. He is sent to the Salem town jail, sharing a cell with his brother and talking to the girl on the other side of the wall, and, eventually, falling in love with her. He has suffered many losses in his life, with his mom and two sisters dying when he was only 10 years old, which causes major trust issues with his father, who showed no emotion when his own son had been arrested, and with his brother, who he finds to clingy and is jealous of whenever Rosaline shows any compassion towards him.

Benjamin Avery, called Benji by most people, is an 8 year old boy arrested and wrapped into the middle of the Salem witch trials. Having looked up to his older brother Charlie most of his life, he is shocked when he sees fear on his ever-brave brother's face as they were pulled away to the jail. For Benji, the Witch trials is a big adventure, and although he was losing weight and becoming sick, he sees it as part of how the adventure goes, and it's just a sacrifice to make to be able to go somewhere outside of his small town. When he sees his brother happy again, he's determined to keep Rosaline, Charlie's reason for happiness, into their lives, no matter how much sucking up that may take.
