Lacy was raised by her grandparents, along with her two older brothers. She joined the Marines immediately out of high school, following in both her brothers footsteps. After training she was part of I MEF in Camp Pendleton, California, and shortly deployed to Iraq in 2008. Before being deployed back to America in late 2009, S.H.I.E.L.D. (Strategic Homeland Intervention, Enforcement and Logistics Division) got a hold of her. Due to her advanced knowledge in weapon technology she was stationed in a secret operation as a Sergeant, helping supervise the use of new weaponry technology. Once SH.I.E.L.D. proposed the use of sustainable energy, such as in the Tesseract, Nick Fury took Lacy Garett off of the project and made her part of S.H.I.E.L.D.'s weapons technology advisers as well as an active spy for the United States of America in early 2011.
