Charlotte is a girl who has never known luxury or riches. She's lived her 17 years a daughter on her father's small farm. The farm only provides enough for them to live and what little extra he has is sold to pay for simple things. She is traded in a loan for money to pay the land tax that threatens to take away the small simple farm James Moore has used to provide for his family to Matthew Hayes. She is married to him against her will and finds herself trapped in a world where there are only few standing laws, one of them being that when two people are married they forever own each other.

Matthew is by far one of the most powerful men in the world. He's made a life of taking advantage of people. He gives loans to people he knows can never pay them back in return for things he wants. Matt never goes without something he wants, so when he sets his eyes on Charlotte Moore and has the opportunity to possess her he jumps on it, forcing her to marry him in return for saving her father's farm. He is generally kind to Charlotte but can be aggressive at times. Charlotte has a slight fear of him. He expects an heir to his fortune and power and has made it clear to Charlotte she is expected to give him just that at whatever time it comes.
