He carries himself in this way for years before one girl in particular breaks him down and gets to see who he really is without even trying. For this reason he can't help but want to be close to her, but her past and the fact that she has a five year old daughter presents a problem. She's nothing like any girl Zak has ever been with before and she will inevitably change him. The only question is, will it be for the better? Or will it destroy him?

Lily became a mother at 19. The father of her child was her abusive boyfriend at the time, Matt. The after effects of his torment made her scared of human interaction, specifically from males. She worried about herself and her daughter for a very long time, unwilling to let anyone else into her life. That is, until she met Zak Bagans, who forced himself into her life whether she liked it or not. No matter what she can't force him back out. He fits like a puzzle piece into her small world and to kick him out would be to open a hole she'd been trying to close for five years. She works at a recording company while attending college, majoring in Psychology.

Avaya is Lily's five year old daughter. Her biological father is Matt, although she takes an immediate liking to Zak. She's depicted as the angel on her mother's shoulder, pushing her into Zak's welcoming arms. She's an average five year old, curious, happy, playful and innocent. She goes to kindergarten and loves arts and crafts. She likes when her mom sings and reads to her. She loves when Zak comes over and plays with her. Even at five years old she can see the change he brings out in her mother. He makes her smile and laugh and she wants to keep seeing her happy.

Matt is Lily's abusive ex-boyfriend and father to Avaya. He started to beat Lily when he found out she was pregnant. He felt stuck with her and that made him miserable. He left her alone before Avaya was 1 and returned when she was 4, wanting to see her. He tries his hardest to keep Lily out of the court system, because he knows he'll be tossed in jail for his haneous acts if she took him to court. When Zak comes around he immediately does not like him. He doesn't like that another man is influencing his daughter. He doesn't like that Lily is starting to recover from his beatings. He's scared she will take him to court after all. He'll go to desperate measures to prevent it from happening.

Aaron has been friends with Zak since their first year of college. He lives with Zak and Nick in a small house in Las Vegas, Nevada. He likes taking pictures and making goofy faces and he's the comic relief for his friends. He hates when people are upset and will try his hardest to cheer them up. So when Zak meets Lily Aaron immediately notices a change in his friend. He seems happier and lighter and more himself instead of the jerk he pretends to be. So he fully supports Zak's relationship with Lily, and he'll come to be a great friend to Lily as well, along with a fantastic babysitter for Avaya.

Nick is one of Zak's best friends, alongside Aaron. He is almost always smiling and has an extremely kind heart. He is always the one to bring his friends back down to earth in times of hardship and stress. He stays focused and calm in difficult moments. Avaya has a huge crush on him, and it isn't hard to see why. He adores the little girl as well as her mother and fully supports the happiness she brings out in his best friend. He immediately swoops in to protect anyone who gets hurt. He's soft-spoken and funny and always a joy to have around.

Anastasia is Lily's older sister. For a long time Lily was envious of her. Ana always seemed to have it together. She went to college, has a well-paying job, a rich husband and a beautiful daughter. Despite the fact that she seems like she'd be a brat, she loved her sister and her family and she fully supports a relationship between Lily and Zak. She despises Matt for what he did to her younger sibling and she is ready to swoop in if the legal system should ever be brought into it. She's intelligent, funny and particular, and she'll do whatever it takes to see Lily happy once again.
