Bernadette Moira (pronounced Moy-Ra) O'Rourke is an elementary school teacher from New York City who has had her heart torn in two by the man she's been best friends with since she was 11. Now at 23, she has finally had enough of him leading her on and giving her the constant run-around. During Spring Break, she returns to the beach peninsula that had been her safe haven as a child. Fixing up the bungalow that her grandparents used to rent during those summers so long ago is enough to get her mind off of the reason why she left the city. She's leaving love behind her in exchange for a peaceful summer that will be soon approaching after her week off. However, when her land-lady's grandson comes into the picture, Bernadette cannot help but feel an instant connection with this all too familiar stranger.
