Mika Marie Dixon grew up believing in fairy tales. She dreamed of being a princess in a magical kingdom, and everything seemed to fit the bill. Her mother dressed her up like a princess, and she had everything a princess had. Money, happiness, all the toys and dresses she could imagine. That all changed when she was eight years old. She came home from school, and Mommy was crying. Daddy was home early, and all she knew was that something was terribly wrong. She didn't know what the word "affair" meant. She didn't realize Daddy had more than just one queen; more than just two. Two months later, Mommy was dead. Mika found her hanging from the ceiling fan. Nothing had ever been the same since. At eight years old, Mika had to grow up. Matty tried to take care of her and shelter her from the things she didn't need to know, but everywhere she went, people knew where she came from. The adulterer and the suicidal woman. Nothing in her life ever got better. As a matter of fact, things continued to get worse. Her father was diagnosed with HIV, and it progressed to AIDS much faster than she thought. Matty, who had such a bright future in hockey, was paralyzed from the waist down during a hockey game at Juniors. Instead of Matty taking care of her, she had to take of him and her father. The best thing that ever happened to her was the car wreck that totaled her car. Because that's where she met Sidney Crosby.

Matty Marcus Dixon was the older brother of Mika. Growing up, he didn't pick on her, didn't try and ruin her fairytales. Since the day she was born, he made a promise to himself to always look out for her. And it was a promise he kept. When everything with his parents went wrong, when his dad had an affair with more women than he could count, and when his mother committed suicide, he protected Mika from everything he could. He fed her, got her to school, made sure she had everything she needed. He looked out for the princess his mother and father left behind because he loved her more than anything in the world. Hockey was the one thing Matty had in his life that belonged to him. He was good at it, very good, but all good things have to end, right? When he was thrown into the side wall, no realized he wouldn't get back up on his own again. His promise faded. Mika became his caretaker, and he resented himself for it. Because of his own selfishness, because of hockey, he couldn't fulfill his promise. And then she met Sidney.
