A priest in training, Rees Ryker is currently the youngest amongst the Ryker family destined for divinity. Every day he trains to be attuned in all things the gods govern, waiting for the day when one of the gods calls to him as their own pupil. Uncertainty clouds him, however, as he grows older and older and receives no words from the gods. Since the older Ryker family members are preoccupied when Rees' father decides it is time to ask for assistance, Rees is designated the priest-overseer for his father's journey, despite not being claimed by his patron god.

Strong and often self-centered, Carter Sloane spent his downtime alone, continuing his work-out regimen or reading about history. When on duty, however, Carter spent most of his time keeping peace just outside the city walls, among the markets. He doesn't remember much from before the Renegation, but he knows what the law is. When he comes across Rees, however, he knows that somehow, for some reason, this kid is too important - and something indescribable is compelling him to assist this strangle, gangling priest.
