... I don't know what to say. Maybe it shouldnt but this feels very personal.
    I'll try anyway.

First thing that caught my attention was that this was way different to what I usually read from you, a man with a dog, reminiscing, thinking,... (not saying it's the only thing of this kind you've written). The second thing was the 'dialogue'. It was touching. And the third thing was the end which was even more touching. I don't know, just, the emotion coming from this and the whole atmosphere gets me. When I imagine them there. Him and the dog.

It is so very sad to read these kinds of things. When a man turns to a loyal animal because a human betrayed. I dont know why is it, but in the human-animal relationship often the truthfulness of relationship can be seen, better than with human-human.

He doesn't, though, just scratches the dog under his chin lightly. “You are the only thing in this cemetery that is still alive, Spot,” he whispers eventually, moving his eyes from the other side of the lake to the dog. The animal wriggles his tail again, barking quietly, almost lovingly.
The man is all too aware of how much he depends on this animal now. How much he needs him, his barking, cold nose and warm tongue and tickling fur.
But it's okay, because the dog won't feel suffocated. The dog won't tell him that nothing is wrong, and leave then. The dog will stick with him, fulfilling the promise the man heard from her.

I quoted it all, sorry... but that is my favorite part. I loved the 'cemetery' thing especially much. Whenever you do something that smells of poetry, it's worth it.
