Relinquishing the Kingdom - Comments

  • J'adore. If I were to write another story for your contest I'd base it on this one. I love it.
I love how it's so tired, and like still somewhat magical but the kind of magic that lives in the gutters because no one cares anymore. Like a new era of new kings and all the old gods don't know what to do or where to go.
It's really quite bleak, but there's like... I wouldn't call it hope, but acceptance I think? that colors this with the tiniest bit of positivity. I feel like this story. Like growing up, and growing out of things. Like wanting to move on, but wanting to hold on at the same time, on the past and the things you might miss if you go forward. It packs a lot into a short piece.
It's... I can't even describe the emotion. It's like when you face-off reality with fantasy and it's reality who always wins. Dreams aren't really exactly what you thought they'd be when you finally get them. It's neither sad or happy, really. My favorite bits were that they no longer fantasize. The tone is a little scared and also kind of wise.
I want to reread it again now.
