  • Your story is so well written! I actually teared up during this chapter.
My heart is breaking for both of them. I can't imagine how painful this is for both of them and just reading through it made knots in my stomach!
I can't wait for the next chapter!

  • @ seannzack

I'm seeing it from Kaylynn's side (see my comment under yours). I made a jump of faith like the one Steven had asked her to make but there were some key differences. I'd been with my SO for over a decade, we're tied together legally as well as emotionally, and we have a family together. His future is my future, we're both in this together for the long-term. Kaylynn doesn't have any of that yet. She's got a new, fragile love. Well, honeymoon's over. Relationships are about compromise and communication. Well, she kept telling him her concerns and fears and he repeatedly blew off her serious concerns. Jeebus, even if she did choose to move, that's a really bad sign for a stable future. Where's his ability to see shades of grey? This is where his age was really showing, it's all black and white to him. Where was his compromise? All she got was, if you loved me, you'd do this. All she got was, it doesn't matter if you have a job, baby, I'll take care of you (in the short term). But what about her long-term future? We all know that 50% of marriages end in divorce; they're nowhere even close to marriage. How many relationships don't end in marriage? Way more than 50%. Most new relationships flame out for all sorts of reasons, she had no guarantees that he wouldn't fall out of love with her in 3 months or they'd run into irreconcilable problems; then what? She's now in a country she can't legally stay in much less work without a visa which she does not have, she's got no place to live in said country if they're not together, she's got no job, she's got no support system, she's got nuffin.

  • Guys - your comments are THE GREATEST! Seriously, I practically ripped my own heart out writing these chapters, and you've helped put them back together again.

Writing these two characters, I see both sides - Kaylynn's from the practical side (job + visa + independence, and Steven's (arms + so in love + that face + he'll take care of you + GAHHHH ARMS) so I'll take it as a compliment to making y'all crazy!

Plenty more coming but just wanted to say hi and THANKS for the awesomesauce feedback. You guys rock! Wink

  • I love this story. It really makes me mad though when everyone refuses to see it from kaylynns point of view. Like I get what they are saying. Take a leap for love. But what about her. She leaps to Florida and then six months later she's back in Canada except this time she's jobless. So now she has to find another job, even though she had a great one that she had been working toward forever. It's selfish to not consider that, and I just want someone to be on kaylynns side. I feel like even her friends are against her. What's so wrong with long distance. Why does it have to be Florida or nothing? That's what makes me mad. That no one considers her side. That they just expect her to drop everything. Well maybe she doesn't want to be a WAG. Maybe she just wants to be Kaylynn with the awesome job who just happens to be Steven stamkos' girlfriend. Why does she had to redefine her life to fit him? Aren't relationships about compromise? Where's stamkos' compromise? I guess it's a testament to your writing how crazy it makes me lol but I just want her to have a fiend that will stand up for her. Because Steven has literally everyone in their life condemning her, including her mother.

  • I feel for him, I do, but he pushed too hard. And it was unfair of him to make her feel like she didn't love him if she didn't go. It was unfair of him to pressure her like that. That would certainly put her back against the wall and feel like she didn't have any options when it came to continuing their relationship. I think some people can accept high risk situations better than others. There's nothing wrong with being risk-averse. It takes all sorts. And he's asking for so much. And he made it all about him.

Seriously, why is it ok for someone to basically say, "If you loved me, you'd come with me" when it's not ok for that same someone to say, "If you loved me, you'd have sex with me" when she didn't want to. "If you loved me" should never be used as leverage for important things. It's shitty to pull that on someone and do so seriously (I've used in kiddingly like 'if you loved me, you'd get me chocolate' but that's pretty clear that there's no emotional 'or else' in that case).

"If you loved me" is coercion. It's emotionally manipulative. And he did it in bed, when her emotions were up. He pushed too damned hard. He made her feel like shit. I'm sure he's devastated but what's he giving up if she couldn't make down during the season but continued the relationship? Regular sex, some emotional support from closeness. What's she giving up if she comes without a job? Stability, financial independence, a guaranteed job, her family, her friends, security.

Why is it so wrong that she can't make that leap of faith? He can't make the same leap in the other direction, that they'll be able to maintain a relationship if she stays. Why is it so wrong that she's not willing to make the largest sacrifice, to put herself at a serious emotional and financial disadvantage, one that could risk her future emotional and financial well-being if it goes wrong on the basis of a summer romance?

Sorry, Steven. I know where your girl is coming from. It's absolutely horrible she left without saying goodbye, yes, no defense. But too much, too much, you asked for more than she could give. You should have known, she'd told you all along. If you'd said, "let's try long distance, I know I'm asking a lot," you might have gotten her down there without basically 'or else'ing her. And it would have given you both time to strengthen your relationship and your bond so that she might be more willing to jump without any kind of security net. But jesus fuck, "if you loved me enough" is not ok. "You've always been two steps behind." "I can't keep waiting for you." "I've tried to convince you that I'll be there to take care of you." "You shouldn't have to beg." None of that is ok.

She begged for understanding, for support for her fears, all she got was, "If you love me…if you trusted our love…I'll take care of you, don't worry about all you valid concerns…" I don't deny your pain but what about what you did to her? Why did she have to beg for understanding? What understanding did you give her? I don't blame her. I can't.

  • I always read on the treadmill and I couldn't finish today because I was bawling. Hubby thought I fell off it when he saw my tears.
I am going to try and make myself feel better by eating double fudge ice cream and watch figure skating.
    Excellent writing!
