Oh god this makes me so happy. You did such an incredible job capturing the idea that beauty is not caused by someone else noticing it, and I have to give you major props for that. I like the style with no capitalization; it compliments the simple yet detailed content of the story itself. I also like that you created the contrast between pretty and beautiful. Mildred confuses, frustrates, and makes me smile all at the same time. She's a good friend, at least for this one night, but it's odd that she never did anything earlier. I suppose it has something to do with the feelings that she has for Clarisse, but it's frustrating all the same. That's another thing I must commend about this story; you don't make a big deal out of the lesbianism that you portray. It's not some huge big thing that the story centers around; it's just another detail and I must say that it is written perfectly. Although it's very sad in nature, I see beautiful optimism in their relationship; that Mildred will not make Clarisse dependent on her words but rather help her reach a healthy state of mind, which is exactly how that kind of situation would need to be handled in real life. Great short story!
