I know. I cried so hard. I can't even think about it without tearing up. It hurt my heart to write about this. But this was planned since the beginning. I'm such a terrible person.

I'm not worthy! I'm not worthy.

Your comment has just made my day. As I read down your comment, all I could think of was, "Yes. Yes. You are right. That is exactly what Axel and Torie's interactions are supposed to do." I'm just so overwhelmed at how much you were able to pull from this story; overwhelmed in all the great ways.

Okay, when I started reading this, it sounded really familiar and then I realized as I kept going that I had read this awhile back but never got around to commenting!

I really liked Axel because even though he sounded absolutely insane sometimes, he was also unapologetically blunt. He acknowledged the things that no one talks about or thinks are issues. He might have said it in really unconventional ways, but it was also thought-provoking. To have to rearrange his words and look between the lines was stimulating in a really unique way. He also broke my heart in a lot of places, like talking about Florence or feeling that he deserves to be homeless or the story about the nurse that saved his life. You could tell (even without the stories and such) that Axel was a very tortured man with a lot of skeletons in his closet. I think that, because of these, it created a very solid and understanding relationship with Victoria. I was so happy when she invited him into her home because they do have a bond.

And, on that note, I loved Victoria. The focus is on Axel and his issues more so than they are on Victoria, but she’s a very caring person and that shows in those brief glimpses. The way she gets him breakfast, got him a windbreaker, and listens to him when no one else will. I love their dynamic and the quick jokes shared between them. Like in chapter eleven, Victoria’s sarcasm about her bubbly personality and then telling Axel that she’s not that old made me laugh. You also showed a lot of depth to her when you started introducing Ean. The chapter when she came back from the honeymoon broke my heart. Axel dying shattered my heart because I felt Victoria’s pain in losing him. Their bond might have been short-lived, but it was deep and emotional.

I liked the format of the short chapters because you were right. It created a sharp and kind of jagged tone to it, but it worked really well for the story. Like someone else said, it was like puzzle pieces. I didn’t see the big picture until I read it all and put them together. It was very emotional and heartbreaking, but also very inspiring and moving. I loved this a lot.

Oh my gosh, you're so fantastic. Your comment made my afternoon (early evening).

Anyway, I completely understand what you're talking about with liking long chapters. I was challenged by a friend of mine to create a story using 100 words per chapter and this was the product. I'm really proud of it.

At first I thought I wasn't going to like this, because the chapters are so short. I'm a big fan of long chapters. But these rather short chapters are more like tiny puzzle pieces; you know, of the puzzles with so much going on in them that you don't really know what's even happening until you've put them all together. Anyway the point of this comment is to say: I like the idea, I like the characters, and I want to keep reading.
