Life As It Is
The Discovery Of Green Day--Again
1992 quickly passed by and it was already 1994. Ella and Holly were a few months close to graduating from college and starting off into the real world. It was a scare to both of them, but they both knew they could each handle it.
It had been just another boring weekend being spent with not much to do but sit around.
Throughout the two years that went by again, Ella was slowly forgetting about her first boyfriend. Her relationship with Dave was constantly on and off. Even though she'd sometimes forget about Billie Joe, her mind would always wander to him during one of the many breakups or fights she'd have with Dave. At the moment, they were currently fine.
Holly woke up from a hangover from the previous night to find her best friend sitting on the couch, flipping through the channels as usual. They both had grown to become TV buddies as well.
"Ahh... you're awake!" Ella said as she saw her best friend plopping herself next to her.
"Fuck it, I'm not drinking for a while." Holly complained, Ella laughed.
"That's what you say every weekend."
"Well I'm serious this time."
Ella continued to laugh. "Whatever you say Holl."
"Turn it to MTV. Maybe they'll show some Nirvana or something." Holly said, trying to change the subject a bit.
Ella shrugged and did what her best friend said. A video they were both not aware of had been ending and it shot to a commercial break. Holly got up and raided through the refrigerator.
About a minute or two later, MTV was back from commercials. A drum beat started off to a new music video, there was a TV on in what seemed to have looked like a living room or a basement and a boy was walking over to a couch to sit down. On the left hand corner, Ella saw the music video was by Green Day, called Longview. Her mouth was hanging open.
"HOLLY GET OVER HERE!" She yelled to her roommate. Holly ran over and realized the reason she was screaming.
The both were sitting in amazement as the bass line to the song started and the song took off. They both stayed quiet and watched the video with just the sound of that and the refrigerator.
For some reason, every time Billie Joe would glance at the camera, Ella felt as if it was their eye contact. She shook it off, realizing it was a stupid thought anyway.
The two watched the video until the very end in which Billie Joe is done with ripping the couch to bits out of pure boredom.
"Now that's what I call a fucking music video." Holly said softly.
Ella was still in awe.
"I-I can't believe they went to a major label." She concluded.
"Telling from that kickass song... there's no way they could've sold out."
"I know. I knew they'd make it one day." Ella beamed.

As many people knew, Green Day hit it big in 1994. Ella and Holly watched the music videos, bought their album, and followed them on television. Given her history with the lead singer, Ella didn't bother thinking about it. She had always been a fan of the band from the beginning. Dave though, was not exactly thrilled.
"I think they suck," He said.
"Well Dave, that's your opinion."
On a particular August day came one of the most memorable moments for Green Day. This was of course, Woodstock '94.
Holly continued to have a crush on Mike and forced Ella to order pay-per-view and watch it.
"Dude, you're paying for it."
"I will, I will!"
"You and your damn schoolgirl crush." Ella laughed.
"I do not have a schoolgirl crush."
"Yes you do."
"No I don't. He's just ummm... oh shut up El!" Ella continued to grin and laugh.
As they already knew, this particular day was extremely muddy due to of course, rain. But this didn't stop Green Day from performing. Things though were starting to get intense and the two were on the edge of their seats.
"Holy shit!" Holly cried out.
"What, what?" Ella asked, not noticing what she was shrieking about.
"Some guard hit Mike!" Holly pointed at the TV.
"What?" Ella shrieked back.
The two watched in amazement as things were getting more insane by the minute. By the time Billie Joe, Mike, and Tre were out of sight, things died down.
"That was... insane." They both said in unison.
The months were rolling by faster since the best friends had graduated from college two months prior to Woodstock '94. The last graduation Ella had had was spent drunkenly, and she had intended to celebrate just as much as she had when she graduated high school.
As much as they followed Green Day and still mourning the death of Nirvana's lead singer Kurt Cobain, they were jumping from job to job for journalism and photojournalism.
Now that Billie Joe was famous, Ella couldn't stop seeing him everywhere as well as think of him. She knew that as of July 2nd he had married a woman named Adrienne Nesser. He had definitely moved on for sure and was probably happy.
She told herself that she moved on. But sometimes she doubted it. There was no way she could even be with him now. She had to focus on her on life and stop thinking of the "what-ifs".
Holly always told her that she'd never forget her first love. Maybe that was it. She had to stop thinking about the past and live in the present.
But without realizing it herself, there was still a special place in her heart for him. He still had one for her too without realizing it either.
