‹ Prequel: Everything I'm Not

Love's Requiem

Anything Goes

I sat on the couch as Zita jumped up and laid across my lap. Alex sat next to me, and rubbed her head.

“She’s adorable.” He smirked, as she yawned.

“She is,” I smiled at her.

“I think there’s some things we should talk about,” He began.

“Like what?” I asked confused.

“I want to talk about what happened on New Years Eve.”

“I’d really rather not.” I mumbled, looking out the window.
“I only brought her to spite you, cause Niko was here. I let my jealousy get the best of me. I just wanted to apologize to you for that. It as a shitty thing to do.” He told me looking in to my eyes.

“I appreciate that.” I nodded, “Thanks” I added.

We spent the day inside on my couch talking; we eventually towards the evening went to the supermarket and bought food for the next few days. I made us dinner, and that night him and I were back on the couch watching TV. There was something about him now that felt different, maybe it was the fact that I was getting used to being around him again, maybe it was the fact that for once we didn’t hate each other. Or it could just be the fact that I was currently feeling my eyes get heavy while my head rose and fell along with his chest which I was currently resting on. He had his arms securely wrapped around me while we were both under the blanket and Zita was at our feet. I’d occasionally look up to see him staring at the TV, while he played with my hair or gave my arms a squeeze. I felt like that small empty piece was finally filled, the part that Niko could never repair because it always belonged to Alex. That night Alex and I slept on the couch; that morning I made us breakfast while he walked Zita. I called Michi up in hopes of advice.

“Ah the stupidest woman in Zagreb, what’s up?” Michi said answering.

“I’m in crisis.” I told her in Croatian as I put the food on the table and sat on my couch.

“I figured as much seeing as the tabloids here are going insane over you and Niko ending it.”

“You know, this is one of those times where you can’t be sarcastic and realize I need help.”

“You’ve been needing help.” She chuckled, “Okay my love, what’s wrong?”

“Promise me you won’t say anything to anyone and this conversation we’re about to have
never happened?”

“Now I know this is serious, of course I won’t say a word.” She said in a serious tone.

“Alex got me pregnant.” I said quietly as the line went silent.

“Man you just got me 50 kuna from Denis.” She exclaimed.

“You bet on me?” I exclaimed.

“I’m sorry but personally and we’ll get back to your situation in a second. But, I always knew you and Alex were going to get back together.”

“Gee thanks, I’m glad you see this as being a good thing.” I sighed.

“And you don’t, aren’t you two back together now?”

“No, and we won’t be.” I said shaking my head as Alex came back with Zita.

“Is that him?”

“Yes but still we need to discus this!”

“You know it’s very rude to talk on the phone in a different language in front of people who don’t understand.”

“It’s also rude to knock up an engaged woman but that didn’t stop him.”

“That didn’t stop you either,” She mumbled.

“Focus!”

“Okay, okay sorry.” She went on as I motioned to the food on the table for Alex to start eating with out me as I went back to my room. “Look, do you love Alex?”

“I don’t know.”

“How do you not know that? That’s something you should know!”

“I mean fuck, I thought I loved Niko.”

“Do you love Niko then?”

“Well I certainly wanted to marry him.”

“Well then get it taken care of and tell him you had cold feet. End of problem.”

“Somehow I see that doing more harm than good.”

“Fine, give it a month.”

“What do you mean?”

“How far along are you?”

“About a month.” I told her.

“Okay, so give it a month, in a month you’ll know if you still have feeling for Alex or not.”

“Okay, thank you Michi.”

“Anytime, I am god after all.” She joked, “Take care of yourself my love.” She told me before hanging up.

“Either that was your mom, baka or Monica.” Alex said as I sat to join him.

“Neither, Michi.” I said putting some eggs on my plate.

“How’s she doing?”

“Good.” I nodded, “She was just calling asking what happened with Niko.”

“I see.” He nodded. “Look, I’m sorry that you had to end it with him.” He said looking up from his plate.

“It’s not all you’re fault.” I told him shaking my head.

“Do you miss him?”

“A little, are you still with Lisa?” I asked him.

“Sort of not really.” He said as I felt my temper flare up, and automatically losing my temper.

“So you knock me up, and yet you still are with her? It doesn’t end does it?” I exclaimed throwing my fork down on my plate storming in to my room.
