Chapter 5

Leigh
I placed Troy down onto the floor and gripped the doorknob nervously. Troy clasped his hands behind his back and rocked on his heels patiently.
“Let me go in first, Troy. I’ll tell you if Mum is inside, okay?”
He nodded and slumped against the wall, humming to himself.
Slowly, I entered the bathroom, my feet tingling from stepping onto the cold tile. Everything seemed in its place, except for the bath curtain. The floral curtain was drawn around the bath, but before I could pull it back, I noticed the mirror. On the mirror was a message. The words: ‘My children, I love you.’ were scrawled across it in red lipstick.
I glanced from the mirror to the bath fearfully. What was that supposed to mean? My breath quickened, and I shut my eyes tightly. My hands were shaking violently as I groped blindly for the curtain and pulled it back.
Tears wet my face and I opened my eyes quickly. What was exposed before me was devastating.
