Nightingale Academy
Shakespearian Novel
He smiled back at me, mirroring my expression and leant down till our noses were almost touching. My eyes slowly drooped closed as my heart beat sporadically inside my rib cage. Our lips were centimetres, millimetres away and then I pulled away.
He leant down further, his lips pressing against my cheek instead of my lips and he pulled away, his eyes questioning and worried. I giggled, taking his hand and entwining my fingers between his. “I'm not kissing you till you tell me.”
He puffed out his cheeks and blew air into my face. His eyebrows were knitted and he was frowning, but the corners of his lips were pulling into a smirk. “Alright, alright. I should have known you were more clever than me.”
I laughed and pulled him back inside the school. We made our way down the staircase and caught up with Haven and Azure.
“Lovers done with their quarrel, yet?”
“Look at their hands, Azure. The young ones have forgiven and forgotten.” Haven announced.
“Oh, how delightful!” Azure smiled widely and tapped her forefinger to her bottom lip. “Now we can enjoy a tea party without any hard feelings.”
“Come along, now.” Haven grabbed our spare hands and dragged us to the greenhouse. “I haven't been here in ages and we thought that the greenhouse would be perfect for our monthly tea party.”
“Monthly?” Amaranth questioned.
“Yes!” Azure replied, skipping slightly as she walked. She took my arm and pulled me away from Amaranth and Haven. “Now that we have a little flower to ourselves, we thought we should spend as much time as possible with her before she blossoms into a beautiful creature that flies off without us.”
I was trying to put her words together and make sense of them but I could only picture a swan with the body of a Lily. It irked me so I chose to ignore it and let Azure carry me swiftly.
Haven pushed the greenhouse doors open and held it open for the three of us. Azure placed me in Amaranth's care and bounded up the trail with Haven. We exchanged looks and he shrugged before we made our way towards them. Wynona and Hayden were already seated around a wooden table while Azure and Haven bustled around them.
Amaranth helped me into a seat and sat down beside me. Azure placed cute, light blue teacups in front of us and Haven proceeded to pour tea into them. She placed the teapot in the centre of the table and joined us with Azure. We sat quietly for several seconds until Hayden spoke.
“Why the hell are we here?” he rudely asked, obviously angry he was here rather than in some closet, making out with Wynona.
Haven shot back at her brother, reprimanding him for his ill-mannered behaviour and I sat back to enjoy the show. Amaranth shot me an amused smile and I carefully picked up my teacup. I first breathed in the aroma and decided that it was Rose Tea. I gently placed my lips onto the rim of the cup and sipped the hot liquid.
Haven and Hayden were still at each other's throats but Azure decided to intervene before they bit their necks off. And if my suspicions are accurate, then they would indeed be sinking their teeth into each other.
“We're here to have some mature fun, but seeing as Hayden can't handle that, then we'll have to kick him out,” Azure scolded.
Hayden scowled and crossed his arms childishly. Wynona giggled and hooked her arm through his. This brought a smile on his face and the rest of the tea party was spent with polite chatter.
“Did you finish the English assignment?” Amaranth finally asked me after ignoring everyone for the whole hour.
I pursed my lips. “No, actually-”
“Then we must go finish it. After all, it is due tomorrow. We wouldn't want you to get a zero,” he exclaimed, getting up and pulling me with him.
“All her work due dates have been extended due to her illness,” Azure tried to stop him, but he ignored her.
“We'll be off now. It was a pleasure joining you all for tea but we must make haste now. Good day.” He pulled me out of the greenhouse and I giggled as he picked me up off the ground by my waist.
“You sound as if you came right out of a Shakespearian novel,” I chuckled, looking up at his defined jaw.
“Yes, well,” he started. “I tend to go back to old habits when I'm impatient.”
.:.
After finishing my seven page English essay, Amaranth carried me to the roof of our dorm. He placed me on a blanket he folded out on the ground and joined me after.
“You're taking me to watch the stars again,” I smiled, looking up at the constellations.
“That and talk a bit.”
I nodded but continued to gaze up. I felt Amaranth's stare and turned my face over to look at him. He grinned at my blush and lightly kissed my forehead. My hand brushed against his and he laced our fingers together.
“This is pretty late and to be honest, it feels weird doing this....” he looked down and for the first time I saw Amaranth embarrassed. My heart rate quickened as I awaited what he would say next and I could feel my heart pounding in my chest. Knowing that he could hear it louder than I possibly could made my blush a deep scarlet red. He smiled though and placed his other arm across my waist. “Would you go on a date with me this weekend?”
I prepared myself to answer but I couldn't speak fast enough because he already started explaining himself.
“I know you go to your parent's on the weekends and you probably want to spend time with them so it's fine if you don't want to-”
I giggled, interrupting him. “I love to go on a date with you, Amaranth.”
“Really?” he sighed out, in relief.
I laughed again and nodded.
“What a blubbering fool,” a male voice said.
“But it's about time, eh?” another came from the same area, sounding very much like Azure.
“I gotta agree with Hayden, though. He was so nervous, he didn't even sense us watching him.”
I blushed, realising that our private conversation was spied on this whole time and hid my face in Amaranth's chest. He lightly placed a hand on the back of my neck and I heard a growl emit from the back of his throat.
“Alright, alright. We'll leave.” Hayden popped out from behind a large potted plant.
“We just wanted to see our little Lilith get asked on her first date.” Azure grinned from behind a bench.
“We're so proud!” Haven cried, real tears in her eyes. “Both of you! Congratulations! I'm so happy. My babies have grown so fast!”
Asure joined her tearfest and Hayden grinned widely, guiding the two sobbing girls back into the building. “Well, we'll catch up tomorrow, eh? Don't do anything I would do and use protection.” He closed the door behind him and I pulled my face away from Amaranth's chest. I touched my cheek with my finger tips and tried my best to control my blushing cheeks.
“That was very embarrassing,” I finally said.
Amaranth chuckled and pressed his lips against my burning temples. “I'm sorry this happened. I should have noticed they were there.”
“It's okay. They were being conniving and that is unforgivable,” I giggled and turned onto my back again. “We'll get them back tomorrow.”
“Don't be too hard on them.”
I laughed. “I won't be. Besides, what could I do?”
Amaranth laughed. “Well, for one, you could blatantly ignore them and cause them to go crazy. They adore you. You not speaking with them would absolutely torment them.”
I pouted. “Would that happen?”
“Oh, I know it would. It happened to me.” Amaranth slid his arm under my waist and pulled me against his body.
“Th-that's different.”
He laughed. “Hardly. They love you too,” he said confidently. “Imagine: Sweet and innocent Lily, so angry that she completely ignores her friends as if they do not even exist. It'll kill them.”
“I don't want to kill them....”
Amaranth laughed again. “I'm exaggerating.”
“I know that,” I argued.
“If you don't want to do it I'll think of something else.”
“Good,” I pouted and looked away from him. “There's no way I could go a whole day without talking to them.”
“Alright, I will,” he promised before muttering, “It would have been great, though.”
“Amaranth....”
He laughed and kissed the crown of my head. “Just enjoy the stars while I think of a diabolical plan.”
I sighed and placed my head between his shoulder and arm. I looked up and watched Polaris before finding the Big Dipper. It was kind of hard to believe. Being asked out on a date. It hasn't happened before. But even that couldn't compare to the person that asked. I really loved Amaranth. I haven't told him yet and I wondered if I should. I think that although I've tried my best to hide my feelings, they have always been obvious, but perhaps he wants to hear my feelings.
“Amaranth?” I asked softly.
He looked back at me, finally calm after watching the stars for several minutes. He raised a brow in question and I felt bashful again. I looked down at his chest but thought about how awful it would be to tell him I love him for the first time but say it while looking at his chest....
I looked up at him again and smiled shyly. “I-I love you too.”
A grin broke out on his handsome face and he flipped me over so I was on top of him. “I'm happy you return my feelings. Thank you.”
I blushed and smiled. “I thought I was pretty obvious.”
He scoffed. “Apparently to everyone but me.”
I laughed and agreed. “Well, I did try to hide it. I didn't think you felt that way about me, so I kept quiet.”
“Who could ever not fall in love with you?” he uncharacteristically rolled his eyes. “Impossible. You've got everyone wrapped around you finger in this academy.” I gave him a pointed look and he corrected himself. “Every male, at the very least.”
I laughed and shook my head. I didn't bother arguing with him. The fact is that no one talks to me and everyone, except for a select few, even dare look at me. But this didn't bother me. Amaranth and Azure were all I really needed. They took very good care of me and I was grateful to them for that. One day, I hope that I will be able to repay them somehow for all their kindness. For now, I will do my best to show them my gratitude by being their friend.
He leant down further, his lips pressing against my cheek instead of my lips and he pulled away, his eyes questioning and worried. I giggled, taking his hand and entwining my fingers between his. “I'm not kissing you till you tell me.”
