Alone This Holiday

Chapter One

"No way," I muttered, putting the final touches on dinner. "I actually did it,"

"What did you do, Daddy?" Scotty asked. Standing on the tips of his toes, he tried to peer up on the bench to see what I'd achieved. "I can't see," He grumbled.

Chuckling I lifted him up a little so he could see, but all he did was mutter a small 'oh'. Not sure if that was good or bad, I just put him back down, and served everyones dinner. Aedan sat in his highchair, stabbing his dinner with a plastic fork, and occasionally actually eating something; the quads were all asleep, except for Riley who I was giving a bottle while I ate my dinner.

"Aren't you going to eat anymore?" I queried, as Scotty sat there, staring at his dinner. "Is it cold, or something?"

"I, um, don't eat chicken," He pointed out.

"What? Since when?"

He sighed, "Cause it's icky," I sighed, stood up, cleared off his plate, and started to heat up some water to make him 2-minute-noodles. "Sorry, Dad," Scotty muttered.

"Eh, it's alright. Why don't you go have a shower while I make your dinner?" Scotty nodded, trudging off to the shower while I boiled the water. Riley squirmed, the bottle was empty, so I put it to one side, burped her and made sure she was asleep before placing her into her cot. Neither of the boys stirred, so I checked they were still breathing, they were, then sat down to finish my dinner.

"Mummy home?" My head shot up to Aedan, he was talking with his mouth full of chicken. So it sounded more like 'mummy whore', which shocked me before I thought about it for a moment.

"No, Mummy isn't home. One more sleep, then she'll be here," I promised.

Later that night, when all the kids were asleep, I did my usual ritual; curling up on the back couch with a bottle of beer to keep me company. The backyard of my new house wasn't like our old one, it didn't have a female touch, there was short grass, a shed that led to the driveway, a kennel for Max and a few odd bits and toys. Anna always had liked gardening, roses and daisy's were her favorite things to plant, and I'd always watch her put them carefully into the ground.

As usual tears flowed freely down my face, I didn't bother to hide the fact I was crying, nobody was here to see me.

I was alone.
