Over the next three years Ada and Wilhelm kept up contact. Their father died in battle and it brought them closer and in some ways pushed them further apart. A week after the letters from Ada ceased Wilhelm found out that Ada was caught smuggling Jews out of Germany and was put in prison. The war ended seven months later and Ada died in prison. Wilhelm returned home, without Ada, to a pile of ruins and three graves.
