I Never Said They'd Be Places You Wanted To Go

Chapter Two.

Johnette lifted up her coffee cup, her lips touching the rim lightly as she took a small drink of the straight, black liquid. She hated the taste of it, but it kept her awake and alert, two things she needed to be at this point, she couldn't be caught slacking off at a brand new job, especially one at Wayne Enterprises. She placed the cup back down on the napkin on her desk, trying not to leave a coffee ring on the wood. Her fingers returned to the computer keyboard.

Johnette had always hated math, she felt stupid for taking the job of an accountant. But, although she hated numbers, she was good with them, and she needed the money. Working for Wayne Enterprises means a big paycheck, and Johnette knew that, it was the only real reason she took the job, replacing the woman who had gone insane. Johnette just hoped that the job wouldn't drive her crazy, too.

The elevator dinged loudly, Johnette loved the ringing sound of the ding of elevators. She looked up at the man who walked out of the elevator, holding himself in a dignified, but relaxed at the same time, posture. He had a square, chiseled facial shape and perfectly groomed dark brown hair. He was well built, muscular, and not too thin, but not too fat, either. His chocolate brown eyes locked on with Johnette's hazel ones.

Johnette knew who it was as soon as the silver elevator doors had slid silently open. She couldn't help but stare as he strode calmly over to her desk. She swallowed lightly, her hands shaking out of nervousness. She stood up quickly as he stopped in front of her desk.

"Are you Ms. Harper's replacement?' Bruce asked, holding eye contact with Johnette. She nodded quickly, unable to get words out of her mouth. "It's a shame about her." He sighed. Johnette nodded again. "And you are?" He asked her, a small smile playing across his lips.

"Johnny Knight- er, Johnette- Johnny, uh... Johnette, but I go by Johnny." She stammered. She mentally slapped herself for stammering in front of him. She couldn't help but feel stupid for it.

"Well, Johnny, I want to thank you for taking the job," Bruce started, "I'm holding a party at Wayne Manor on Wednesday, how would you like to attend?"

Johnette started stammering again. "Uh- Me? Party- Wayne Manor... Me? Uh... Yeah- uh, yes. Um, sure, uh.. Mr Wayne." She mentally slapped herself again.

"That's wonderful." He beamed. "See you then." Bruce turned around and started trekking back over to the elevator, he stopped midway and turned back around. "And it's Bruce, not Mr. Wayne." With that, he finished his walk to the elevator, his finger pressing strongly against the down button.

As soon as he was back in the elevator, Johnette noticed the other workers staring at her, a few of the female workers glaring... She quickly turned her focus back to the computer screen and continued her work.
