The Perfect Smile

Who are you?

She was completely speechless after looking at him. He had a few of the same facial features as herself, such as eye shape. He had her original dirty blond hair, and he hair her mother's facial structure that she remembered.

" Who are you? "

The teenage boy ask quietly looking Maddy up and down. He thought she was defiantly in the wrong place. She just didn't fit into the picture. The Joker looked at him and shifted back and forth on his feet kind of uncomfortable for being here in this moment, Maddy hadn't said a word.

Maddy: Hi.. Zachary, right?
Zachary: Yes.

She smiled at him and he raised an eyebrow and scooted back again. Her smile reminded him of his mothers, the woman who he missed so much. Maddy noticed how uncomfortable and scared he looked and tried to sooth him with some of her words.

Maddy: I'm not going to hurt you.

She stated walking closer over to the boy and got down on her knees and raised a hand up and ran it over his cheek, making sure she wasn't dreaming. She couldn't believe that her brother was sitting here right in front of her. A brother who she never even knew she had. She couldn't help but let a smile creep across her face. He scrunched up his eyebrows though, almost in confusion. Maddy backed away looking at him and wondered why his expression changed.

Maddy: What?
Zachary: You look so much like my mom when you smile.

She couldn't help but chuckle and then turned her attention around and looked behind her to Jack. He was standing there now leaned up against the wall just watching. She could tell that this was never his intentions for Zach, but she couldn't help it. She couldn't let him use her brother to toy with Maroni.

Zachary: I just wanna go home to my mom, please let me go.

He begged and pleaded. Maddy's heart broke a bit hearing the boy plead to go home to his mother, to their mother. He seemed too sweet to be a mob members son.

Zachary: I know I'm probably here because of my dad, but trust me! He won't come after me.. he hates me.

He said in a soft spoken high pitched voice. Maddy only looked at him in confusion. How could a father hate a child? How could a father not come after his very own child if he knows he's in danger.

Maddy: Why wouldn't your father come, sweetie?

She ask still confused and wanting to know.

Zachary: My dad doesn't claim me.. only my mom does.
Maddy: And why is that?

He only sulked in the corner a bit, clearly not wanting to share with Maddy. Especially since the Joker was still in the room. Jack didn't know what to think, nor did he know what Maddy's intentions were with him. She didn't know if he planned on telling him that she was his sister or what, but he did know that he wasn't going to leave her. He knew that Maddy could probably take the teenager down in a second, but if for some reasons the table turned he'd never forgive himself for leaving her alone.

Zachary: My father hates me because I'm gay.

He just spat out when both Maddy and Jack least expected. Jack's expression was priceless, somewhere between shock and complete confusion, while Maddy's was more mellow with just confusion. She couldn't believe that a father would hate his own son because of his sexual preference. That just blew her away that a man could be so closed minded.

Maddy: He hates you because you're homosexual?
Zachary: Yes... he has nothing to do with me, if it wasn't for my mother then I would be on the streets by now. So if he's expecting to catch Maroni by me then he might as well kill me now.
Maddy: He's not going to hurt you.. I promise.
Zachary: Why should I trust you? How do I know you're not helping him!
Maddy: Because your mother.. Carol.. well she's my mother too!

She snapped at him, without even realizing what she was saying. She looked at his face once she uttered the words and his face was completely dumb folded. He didn't know if she was telling the truth or if she was simply lying to her. He didn't know anything. How could he sit here and believe that he had a sister he didn't even know about?

Zachary: You're my sister? You can't be..
Maddy: I am.. We have the same mother, just not the same father.
Zachary: But.. Mom never told me about you.
Maddy: I'm sure she had her reasons. Listen, stay here for a few minutes and I'll be right back. Ok?

He only nodded his head and Maddy climbed back up to her feet and walked towards Jack. He exited the room and she closed the door when she walked out making sure that Zach couldn't hear them. He looked at her with a blank expression, not really knowing what to say about the situation.

Joker: Wait, come down here.

He said taking her by the hand and leading her down a long hallway, finally they had arrived at a door about seven down from Zach's room. She couldn't believe that this place was so huge. He opened the door and she walked inside seeing a giant bed in the middle of the room with a purple and green blanket over it, the floors were a dark carpet, and the walls were a dark green. She could tell this was probably his bedroom in the place. It just fit the character of "The Joker" so well, she thought.

Maddy: Jack, he can't stay here.
Joker: What am I suppose to do, Madeline? Just let him go?
Maddy: Let me take him to Carol.
Joker: Maddy..
Maddy: You know that he's no help to you now.
Joker: How do I not know he's lying?
Maddy: Oh come on.. you've had him for days. You know if Maroni wanted him he would have stopped at nothing to find his son. He's telling the truth, Jack!
Joker: I can't believe you have a brother whose queer.
Maddy: Don't call him a queer.
Joker: It disgusts me really.
Maddy: Homophobe.
Joker: I guess you could say that.

He said walking over and taking a seat on his bed. It was true though, Jack didn't like people who were homosexual. It wasn't that he was closed minded, or anything. He was just ignorant on the subject. He had never been around someone who was openly gay. In fact, he had never been near a gay person before Zach.

Maddy: Please Jack, can we please just let him go. Please?

He looked over and saw her standing there with her arms crossed, her eyes were filled with sadness, and a pout was almost forming on her lips. He chuckled a bit to himself knowing that she was going to get her way whether he liked it or not, which was slowly becoming one thing he hated.. but yet he loved it at the same time.

Jack: Go get him.

A smile spread across her lips and she hurriedly made her way out of his bedroom and down to the hallway where Zach was. She opened the door and once again saw the boy huddled in a corner scared for his life. She smiled wide and then looked over at him.

Maddy: I'm taking you home...to Carol, your mom.. our mom.
Zachary: You are!?
Maddy: Yes, so come on!

He bolted up from his sitting position and rushed over to Maddy. She was surprised when he wrapped his small arms around her and pulled her tight for a hug. She hugged back with a smile on her face.

He mumbled something along the lines "princess, you're gonna be the death of me." and got up from his bed. He walked out of the room and down the hallway. Arriving at Zach's room he looked in and saw that the boy was hugging her. Now, if it would have been anyone else then he probably would've shot them dead, seeing them hugging her. But since it was her brother.. and since he was gay nonetheless he didn't bother to even give an emotion to it. He just cleared his throat getting both of their attentions.

Joker: Does your mother have a cellphone, kid?
Zachary: Yes.
Joker: Here.

He said handing him a old cell phone. It looked like one of the prepaid ones you'd buy at wal-mart. Maddy never noticed Jack had a cell phone before, he probably just had it for certain situations.

Joker: Tell her to meet you at the docks in 20 minutes, and to come alone or else she won't get you.

He obeyed Jack's orders and called his mother giving her The Joker's instructions. Maddy couldn't help but feel proud that Jack was going through this. She would've never thought that his heart could be this large. Once everything as set up. The Joker blind folded the boy while he and Maddy let him make his way down the stairs. She knew exactly why he blind folded him. It was so he couldn't come back, or show anyone else where the Joker's hideout was.

When they arrived at the living area all of his men just looked at him in confusion but didn't bother to ask what he was doing. They knew he probably had a reason for what he was going to do, and they was aware that if he wanted help then he would ask for it.

Joker: Jimmy, Jared, you're coming along.

He said to the boys and watched as they grabbed their guns almost automatically and reached over grabbing their mask. It was almost as if his men were trained robots who he could control with just a few single words. Maddy helped Zachary out the back of the house while The Joker, Jared, and Jimmy followed behind them. They slowly climbed into a van. She reassured Zachary with her kind words as he felt the van move below him. She was aware that he was probably on the urge of shitting his pants due to the fear.

Zachary: You're a lot like mom..

He said catching her off guard. She looked down at him and a smile creeped across her face. She was glad she was like her mother, even though she had only had a little time with her. She remembered her vaguely but what she did remember, her mother was a kind and loving woman who only wanted what was best for her children. The van came to a halt right outside the docks. Maddy reached over and removed the blindfold from his eyes and he adjusted them to the darkness. Jimmy opened the back door of the van and Maddy climbed out and then helped Zachary down.

Zachary: That's my moms car, right there!

He said pointing to a silver ford focus that was sitting by the docks. Maddy told him to go on, and watched as he took off running towards the car. She watched as the door slowly opened and a woman got out. Maddy's eyes fixed on her and studied her for a few minutes. She couldn't believe how much the two of them looked alike. They had the same skin tone, same facial structure, and same eye s. There hair color was only a few shades different and there body structure was almost the same. She was just as beautiful as Maddy remembered.

She saw her wrap her arms around the boy in a secure motherly hug. A tear slipped down her cheek and she found some strong arms wrap around her waist. She leaned back into his body for a second looking at her mother, wanting so bad to go over and to see her. However she knew that she couldn't.

Maddy: Let's go.

She whispered to Jack, he nodded his head a bit and released his grip on her a bit and climbed back inside the van. She climbed in the passenger side this time and soon the van was out of the distance of Carol and Zachary. She couldn't believe that she was just a hundred feet away from her mother, if that. She only wished it was a different situation and she could get close to her.

Zach released himself from his mother's grip and looked up into her eyes. He noticed that they were the same color as Maddy's and smiled.

Zachary: Mom! Maddy set me free.

Carol's face changed into shock, horror, fear, confusion, and love all at once. She couldn't believe that her son had just said those words. She hadn't heard that name in years, although she thought about the little girl every day. Maddy consumed most of Carol's thoughts. She loved her daughter dearly, and only left to keep her alive. Sal Moroni had threatened to take the life of her daughter if she didn't leave with him, so she felt she had no choice. She knew that Joe would take amazing care of their daughter, but she hated the fact that she wouldn't be there to watch her grow up, to teach her how to do things that only a mother could do. She let a tear fall down her face as her son Zachary looked up at her.

Zachary: She really is my sister?
Carol: Yes, she's your sister.

She said with a whimper and pulled her son close. She never thought she would hear about her again. Her now husband, Maroni told her that if she ever contacted her Joe or Madeline again he would have her and Maddy killed. So she stayed away. She had sent the divorce papers to Joe in the mail, and stayed as far away as she could. She couldn't believe that after all of these years, she and Maddy were linked once again, but if Sal ever found out then there would be hell to pay.

Carol: Zach baby, please don't mention anything to your father about this. Especially Maddy, ok?
Zachary: Ok mom.. she's beautiful though, she looks like you! She's so sweet, and nice.

Carol let more tears fall as she climbed into the car. She always knew that Madeline would grow up into an amazing woman. She always knew that she would make her proud. Carol and Zach were heading down the highway when Carol begin to think about the situation and wondered how Madeline found him if he was in the clutches of the Joker.

Carol: Sweetie, how did Maddy help you escape the Joker?
Zachary: I don't know, mom. It was weird. Seems like he listened to her. He was so scary until she came along.. then he was just quiet. I noticed the look he gave her though.
Carol: A bad look?
Zachary: No... almost a sweet look, Mom.

Once they arrived at the hideout everyone stepped out. The Joker walked inside first with Maddy following slow behind him. Jimmy and Jared walked in last and rejoined the rest of the men at the table who were still playing poker. Maddy and Jack walked upstairs, and back into his room. Once she was inside he locked the door behind her.

Maddy: I want you to know, you done the right thing.
Jack: Whatever you say, Princess.

He said walking over to the bed and falling down backwards on it. Some weird part of him.. knew that he done the right thing. It disgust him in a way, really. He didn't like feeling about this, but something about her made him feel human, and if these feelings is what he had to endure to have her then he was willing to sacrifice himself.

He felt the bed sink down a bit on the opposite side and looked over seeing her laying there. He couldn't help but smirk towards her, glad to know that he had made her happy. He still didn't know what a girl like her saw in a man like him, but he was content with not knowing. All he cared about was the fact that she did love him. He didn't care why, or how he just cared that she did. He knew that everything between them would defiantly take work and time. But he was willing to put that into the relationship, although he didn't quiet know how he was going to have a relationship with her and still be Gotham's most feared and dangerous criminal.
