Play Those Drums

I was sitting behind Spencer's drum set, waiting.

I gave an exasperated sigh. We were apparently waiting for someone else to come play the bass.

I swatted away stray bubbles from my face, popping one, causing my eye to sting.

I clasped a warm hand to my face, rubbing it carefully.

"Brendon! Put the bubbles away!" He had, unfortunately, woken up from is nap.

He stuck his tongue out and continued. I waved the drum sticks in his face menacingly. He stopped, wide eyed.

I chuckled, remembering the last time he had pissed me off while I had drum sticks at hand.

"I wonder if he still has that scar.."i thought, maniacally.

Brendon set the bubbles down, pouting.

Ryan walked in through the garage door, a lump in his hands. "I found you an ice pack, Amy."

I reached for it, taking the cold block and setting it expertly in the space between my shoe and ankle.

Brendon idly played a tune on the piano, getting into it. He, then, started slowly.

"Life is a mystery,
Everyone must stand alone.
I here you call my name,
And it feels like....home"

He whisper sang the last word, and I can't lie, but-okay, so I can lie. But, I'm not going to. It sounded really good.

Ryan grabbed his guitar and all hell broke loose. How it happened, I had no idea.

I felt the beat Ryan and Brendon were providing me. i felt the drum sticks moving in my hands, the feel of the impact vibrating through me.

"When you call my name it's like a little prayer,
I'm down on my knees,
I wanna take you there!" I sang.

"In the midnight hour,
I can feel your power.
Just like a prayer,
You know I'll take you there!" Brendon was pressing down on keys furiously.

"I hear your voice,
It's like an angel sighing.
I have no choice." I shook my head, feeling the words. "I hear your voice."

"Feels like flying." Ryan and Brendon chimed.

I continued on. I hadn't realized then, but I was being given a solo.

"I close my eyes,
Oh God, I think I'm falling.
Out of the sky,
I close my eyes.
Heaven help me!"

Brendon took over.

"When you call my name, it's like a little prayer.
I'm down on my knees,
I wanna take you there!"

Ryan joined in. "In the midnight hour,
I can feel your power.
Just like a prayer, you know I'll take you there!"

Both Ryan and Brendon played a sharp note, indicating me.

"Like a child,
You whisper slowly to me.
You're in control, just like a child.
Now I'm dancing. Ryan and Brendon joined on the last word.

"It's like a dream,
No end and no beginning.
You're here with me, it's like a dream."

I took a breath, "Let the choir sing!"

We all started.

"When you call my name, it's like a little prayer.
I'm down on my knees,
I wanna take you there!"

The beat slowed and softened, alternating notes.

"When you call my name," I sang softly.

"It's like a little prayer." Brendon chimed.

"I'm down on my knees."

"I wanna take you there." Harmonizing, we finished.

Silence.

We were all breathing erratically, adrenalin rushing through our veins.

"Woah."

All three heads snapped towards the garage door.

My eyes grew wide as I realized who it was.
