He Comes in Peace

Chapter Nine

"Yes! Yes, that's right! English!" Skye whooped, grinning.

After a moment, she had no idea why she was so happy. She blushed and lowered her gaze, staring at her bare feet.

The boy cocked his head and looked at her.

"Did you understand what I had said?" he asked. Skye noted that his English seemed more old-fashioned and proper.

"Wha? Um…You mean when you were speaking in Spanish?"

"Yes."

"Oh, no. I'm taking German for my language class, and I'm not—"

"Sie sprechen Deutsch? Das ist gut, weil mein Deutsch ziemlich besser ist, als mein Englisch," he said fluently,

Skye's eyes popped open wide.

"Er…I'm kinda getting a sixty percent for my German class…"

The boy tilted his head again.

"What is your name?" he asked, thankfully in English.

"Skye Cedona. Skye being my first name, and Cedona being my last," she said clearly, giving her head a firm nod. "What's your name?"

Now, what the boy said after that question Skye couldn't comprehend. It seemed like a combination of Latin and some other language, with a series of back-of-the-throat noises, and a whole lot of moving from the lips. Not that Skye was looking at his lips.

"Erm…Do you have an English name?" she said, quite embarrassed.

"I believe so. Kartayon."

"Car what?"

"Kartayon. K-A-R-T-A-Y-O-N. Pronounced as so: Car-Tay-Yawn." He articulated his words very clearly, and when he said it even slower, it made Skye blush.

"Kartayon?"

"Yes. Kartayon Zakin."

"Oh…Erm, nice to meet you."

"Likewise. It is a pleasure to meet your acquaintance." Skye's face stiffened at his formality, and she corrected herself. He didn't sound like he was speaking in old fashioned ways; it sounded like he belonged to a Royal England family, and he spoke to her like she was the Queen.

"Er, yes, thanks." Now that they had gotten over their little language hurdle, she had no idea what to say. What planet are you from? Why are you here? Those questions just seemed a little ridiculous.

So she settled for the previously asked. "What did you say in Spanish?"

"I said Mis disculpas para imponer su casa. Yo no podría ayudar pero podría advertir que usted vivió aquí. Los humanos en los uniformes con armas; ellos entraron en el—"

"No, no, no! I meant, um…Oh, never mind."

Kartayon looked confused.

"What are you doing in my room?"

"I am here because the humans whom carried weapons had discovered me, and previously, it was an instinct to monitor your path, as to ensure a safe return on your part. Therefore, during the moment of difficulty, I simply retraced the foot steps you imprinted upon the ground, thus leading me to your…Room."

"How did you get up here?"

Kartayon gestured at the broken window.

"Was it you who threw the rock?" Skye asked sharply.

The boy nodded, not an ounce ashamed in any way. "Yes, I could sense the humans nearby, and in preparation, I—"

"In preparation? You broke my damned window!" Skye screeched, forgetting to keep her voice down.

"Yes, I can see that."

Skye sighed loudly and slapped a hand to her forehead.

"My mom was really worried when she found out! Now I have to go home a day early, because you 'sensed the humans nearby, and in preparation blah, blah-blah, blah-blah!'" she hissed angrily.

The boy blinked.

"From my general knowledge of human behavior, I would presume you are quite disgruntled?" he asked slowly.

"Yes, I am flipping disgruntled! I'm pissed, I'm mad, I'm annoyed!" When the boy didn't say anything, and studied her face with a blunt look on his face, Skye exploded.

"You know what, Kartayon, you can have this back—" She picked up the rock and threw it hard at him. He ducked swiftly and it flew through the window. "And you can go stick it up your ass and fly back to the moon where you belong with your other finned freaks!" she finished.

Again, ran it through a translator: Sie sprechen Deutsch? Das ist gut, weil mein Deutsch ziemlich besser ist, als mein Englisch...equals: You speak German? That is good, because my German is rather better than my English...

Heh. Happy? Not a cliff hanger this time :) I adore cliff-hangers though...=]
