Embrace Your Inner Ginger
Chapter 11
“Finally! I thought they’d never get together,” Lizzie exclaimed as Jess danced out of sight. Julian chuckled, glad that his friend had cheered up, even if it was only slightly.
“Should we let Jess tell people herself or just continue helping the grapevine?” He asked, still laughing. Just as Lizzie was about to reply, Tom came over to see what was going on, being nosy as usual.
“Help the grapevine! I want to know! What’s going on?” He badgered.
“I guess that saves me making the decision,” Julian thought to himself. He then replied, “Pratik just asked Jess out, and she said yes. Now she’s skipping around the campsite like she’s been eating magic mushrooms.”
“She’s dating the baby’s arm holding an apple?” Tom shouted in amazement, “Jess and Pratik? Seriously?” Julian and Lizzie stared at him strangely.
“What the hell are you on about? How does a baby with fruit relate to Pratik?” Julian enquired. Tom shook his head, remembering they didn’t understand the joke, and partially explained, “In joke, sorry. If you ate lunch with us at school, you’d get it. Never mind.”
“No, go on, I want to know.”
“Fine, I’ll just say it relates to him having a rather large penis…” He then strode off to spread the news, leaving Lizzie and Julian looking at each other in confusion.
“Tom’s weird,” Lizzie stated. Julian nodded in agreement and led her back towards the few people still awake. Someone had started the campfire up again now that the wind and snow had died down, so they huddled close to the roaring flames, absorbing the warmth like cats in front of a fireplace.
Suddenly Addison let loose a loud, painful yell. Shushes rose from all sides, and someone whispered, “Holly’s asleep!” A stream of curses flew from his mouth as he realised the source of his pain. Leaning too near to the fire, he had somehow managed to set the tips of his hair alight. He dived into the snow and rolled around, quickly extinguishing the flames, but they’d already left their mark. One side of his hair ended with a couple of inches of charred, black mess. Seeing he was okay, Zoe giggled at the sight. Then feeling guilty, she offered to trim it off in the morning, but being the strange child he was, he refused, wanting it to stay ‘natural.’
“Fair enough not wanting it any shorter, but burnt isn’t natural. You should really let me cut it off!” She chided, but to no avail. As always, Addison remained stubborn in his awkwardness.
