‹ Prequel: You Belong With Me

All I want For Christmas is You

Breathe

The next morning, I woke up. I sighed and put my pillow over my face as I remembered what had happened last night.
After I dragged Matt out of the kitchen, I had tried to talk to him, but he was really embarrassed. He went right home.
I kicked the blankets off my body and sat up. I looked at the floor, wondering if I should call Matt right away or not.
I decided to call him.
I took my phone off the nightstand and dialed his number.
“Hello?” He said when he answered the phone, sounding funny.
“Hey!” I exclaimed, “Last night was crazy, huh?” I laughed.
He didn’t answer.
“Matt?” I said, confused, “Are you okay.”
“No, not really.” He said, sighing.
“Do you want to talk about it?” I asked.
“I leaned into the kiss.” He blurted out.
I blinked, confused, “What?” I asked.
“Kailey was talking to me, and she leaned in to kiss me, and I leaned in too.”
Was he serious? I couldn’t breathe.
“Taylor?” He said, “I’m sorry.”
“No, it’s okay.” I said quietly, “Um, I’ve got to go.” I said quickly.
“No, wait…” I hung up before he could answer.
I tucked my knees up to my chest and buried my head in my knees and began to cry.
Why was I so upset? He apologized!
“Cut it out! Get up and move on!” My brain told me, but my heart fought back.
“No! He technically cheated on me! I trusted him!”
I lay back on the pillows, pulling the blankets back up to cover my shoulders.
I could hear my phone ringing, my ringtone was both mine and Matt’s favorite song, Living on a Prayer by Bon Jovi. I knew it was Matt, but I ignored it.
The phone stopped ringing and I closed my eyes. I felt a tear slip out.
NO! No crying. I told myself, rubbing at my eyes frantically.
The phone began to ring again. I sighed and picked it up. I saw that it wasn’t Matt, but my friend from school, Alexandra. I sighed and picked up the phone.
“Hey, Alex.” I said.
“Hey Taylor.” She said, “Did you finish the book yet?”
“Yeah.” I said. Alex was talking about To Kill A Mockingbird, one of my personal favorites. Our English teacher, Mr. Armour, had assigned it to us over Christmas Break, along with MacBeth and Jane Eyre.
“Oh. Did you finish all of them?” She asked.
“Yes.” I said.
“Oh, okay. Bye!” She quickly hung up the phone.
I sighed and hung up my phone. That was odd. I heard a knock on my door.
“Come in.” I murmured, not really meaning it.
“Taylor!” A perky voice squealed, “Guess what?” I could hear Kailey bouncing with excitement
“What?” I muttered, not really caring.
“I’m going to the Christmas Dance at your school!”
“Well, isn’t that nice.” I muttered, rolling my eyes.
“Aren’t you going to ask who I’m going with?” Kailey asked, sounding annoyed.
“No.” I replied bluntly.
“Matthew!”
I sat up, “Matt?! MY Matt?”
“Your ex-Matt.” Kailey said. I now could see she had an evil smile on her face, “Didn’t he break up with you? He said he was going to call you to break up with you.”

I see your face in my mind as I drive away
'Cause none of us thought it was gonna end that way
People are people and sometimes we change our minds
But it's killing me to see you go after all this time

Mmm, mmm, mmm, mmm, mmm, mmm, mmm, mmm
Mmm, mmm, mmm, mmm, mmm, mmm, mmm, mmm

Music starts playin' like the end of a sad movie
It's the kinda ending you don't really wanna see
'Cause it's tragedy and it'll only bring you down
Now I don't know what to be without you around

And we know it's never simple, never easy
Never a clean break, no one here to save me
You're the only thing I know like the back of my hand

And I can't breathe
Without you, but I have to
Breathe
Without you, but I have to
