Eternal Ties

Patrick

We pulled up to the driveway. Chris got out, opened my door, and scooped me up in his arms, cradling me like I weighed nothing more than a sack of flour.

“Comfortable?” he smirked as I wrapped my arms around his neck and rested my head against his chest.

“Mmhmm” I mumbled, closing my eyes.

He carried me inside and laid me on the couch. He handled me so carefully, like I was going to break with the slightest touch.

“I have a long story to tell you” he sighed, sitting down in the chair across from me, “And I don’t know if you’re ready to hear it”

“Just tell me, Chris” I sighed.

“Fine, I’m just going to say it upfront…you have a brother” he said. I knew he was trying to say this as gently as he could, but it was pretty blunt.

“W-What?” I stuttered.

“A brother, Maria, your father had another child before you” he said, looking down at me apprehensively.

I know after the things I’ve gone through in the past three weeks, I should be used to receiving ‘shocking’ news. I could have a long lost twin for all I know.

“I’m not gonna say anything…because if I say something it’ll just turn out all wrong so just…tell me” I stuttered. Ugh, me and my babbling.

He smirked and went on, “Okay, so I’ll start from the beginning. Before your father met your mother, he was in a relationship with another vampire named Adeline. He wasn’t in the relationship for love; everyone knew that, even Adeline knew that. He just needed an heir to continue his work if he was killed or just simply wished not to deal with rogue vampires all the time. So he impregnated Adeline and she gave birth to baby boy named Patrick. Now with vampire children, they stop growing around a certain age, most in their mid-20s, some in their 30s or 40s, or even as young as 10 years old. But Patrick stopped growing or ‘froze’ as we call it when he was 19. When he was younger, Patrick was just like any other vampire child: wild, vivacious, and biting anything he could get within arm’s reach” he chuckled, “Your father thought he had found the perfect heir and was soon blinded by his love to any imperfections the boy had, even when he began killing the human maids your father hired to clean the house. As he grew into his teenage years, Patrick became what you might call a brat. He refused to go to school, thinking himself not worthy to learn with commoners, so your father homeschooled him himself. Patrick also became a bully, smart mouthing anyone he came into contact with, hitting the maids and even slapping his own mother”

I stared at Christopher, absorbing everything he was telling me, trying to imagine my brother in my mind.

“Patrick always knew what he was to become and he knew what would be expected of him. So he, like your father, wanted an heir for himself. But he didn’t want just any vampire girl off the street to carry his heir; he wanted Hanover blood to run through her veins, so that his heir would be pure and not tarnished by an inferior blood. He didn’t know what to do since he all of his female cousins were already married. He then asked your father to make have another baby with Adeline, but this time, make it a girl so he may have a wife”

I couldn’t help but let out a scoff. This guy sounded pretty stupid.

“I know his demand sounded pretty outrageous, but he knew it too. But he also knew that his father would do anything for him. However, your father was having problems of his own at the time. Adeline and he were no longer together. They were never officially ‘together’. She had already gone off and married another vampire. As a result James knew he must find another female vampire or his ancestral line would be tarnished. But in the course of finding another vampire to mate with…he found your mother” Christopher paused to look down me, a slight smile on his face.

I had already sat up on the couch, my eyes wide, drinking in everything Christopher was saying. “Go on” I urged quietly, as if I was in a trance.

His smile grew wider and he continued, “Your mother, of course, being human wasn’t fit to carry the heiress of a powerful vampire but your father, once again blinded by love, married your mother and impregnated her with you. Your brother was of course furious that he wouldn’t receive a proper heir. Torn between his two loves, he anxiously sought to find a balance between the two. He then came up with what he thought was the perfect plan: When Holly gave birth he would take the girl and give her to Patrick. James told Patrick that even if she was human, she was still capable of producing vampire offspring. He would then tell your mother she died prematurely and hopefully give her the child she wanted someday. Now, Holly knew your father was a vampire but did not know of his position or of his son, so he knew she couldn’t suspect anything. His plan seemed absolutely perfect. Perfect, that is, until he saw you”

My eyes teared and my throat became inflated. Christopher smiled slightly as I began to cry silently.

“You going to be okay?” he asked tenderly. I looked up at him to see his blue eyes warm again and smiling. I couldn’t help but smile back and nod.

“You, with your big green eyes and snow white skin. Your father fell in love with you that night, it was then he realized what a slave he had been to Patrick, schooling him, letting him get away with murder, and complying with his every need. James then swore he would never let Patrick get to you, even if he was killed in the process”
