Confusion

Emily drove without thinking of where she was headed. She just needed to clear her head and think. He was so ignorant it was killing her. She knew Jack was right, she knew talking to Alex would do something; she just wasn't completely ready to risk their already rocky friendship.

Either telling him how she really felt about him would end up with things being awkward between both, Alex brushing it off, or, very unlikely, them going with it.

She at least she knew she needed to end the friends with benefits deal, it was breaking her more each time and as much as she wanted to be with Alex, she realized this isn't the way to do it.

Alex eventually thanked Jack and waved bye, climbing down the tree and heading towards his Audi. He was determined to find Emily and talk to her, praying Jack was right in "everyone's" assumption. He drove towards Starbuck's and grabbed two of Emily's usual and contemplated where she might have gone.

He drove past her house noticing her car missing and drove to the next spot that came to mind.

Emily slowly walked across the grass with her arms crossed smiling at the memories of the spot her mind subconsciously led her to. It was their spot; where they met, where they talked about anything and everything [when they talked more], where they became best friends.

Emily sat next to bushes along the edge of the lake with her knees against her chest staring out over the water. A couple geese waddled along the grass. Emily pulled out a couple bags of bread crumbs she happened to have. Whenever she thought she might end up here, she would take them.

Alex found her sitting near the pond's edge with a few geese surrounding her. She was feeding them bread crumbs…and crying.

Alex felt his heart tear in two at the sight of her tears. He walked slowly forward and sat Indian style across from her.

Emily didn’t look up when she felt the presence of another body sit across from her. She knew who it was and proceeded to toss the other bag to him as tears strolled down her cheeks.

"Emily, can we talk?" Alex asked cautiously setting one of the coffees in front of her.

She looked up and glared not responding to the coffee. It took him by surprise to see her tear stained face emitting such hatred.

"Oh now we can talk?" she snapped. She surprised herself with the anger boiling through her body.

Alex looked like he had just been slapped hard across the face. "Wha, What?"

"I've been trying to talk to you for 2 weeks Alex!" Emily exclaimed jumping up quickly. "Do you realize that in the past two months we've fucked more that we've talked?! I can't get two words in because you're too caught up in tearing my clothes off to listen!" Emily hissed.

"Em—"

"No Alex! Do you know that it's like? I'm just another one of them," she pointed to her left towards the street. "Why should I expect anything else? That's all I am, a fuck, nothing more. That's all girls are to you; you'd think I'd know that after being your best friend for eight years. But no, I'm not any different. You make me sick!" Emily shook out of anger.

"That's not true," Alex whispered forcefully back.

Tears poured down Emily's face as she glowered at him. He looked back at her with a pleading glare from his eyes. She needed to listen—this wasn't supposed to happen.

“How is it not?! Please explain to me Alex how I can believe you when all we ever do anymore is have sex!” she exclaimed throwing her hands in the air. “I want my best friend back. I didn’t do this to end up here!” she said tears spilling from her eyes.

“Because I fucked up! That’s what I do, you know that! You could have stopped it if you didn’t want it,” he shot back, regretting it as soon as he said it. He saw hurt flash across her eyes but went away as soon as it came. “Em—”

“You’re right,” she responded, her voice shaking as she began to turn around.

“Em, wait, please,” he pleaded and grabbed her wrist, turning her around into him. “I didn’t mean that.”

“Yes you did,” she replied pushing herself away from him. "I should've never slept with you that night," Emily muttered, shook her head and walked away. “And don’t follow me,” she added with venom in her tone.

"I'd take it all back if I knew this is what was going to happen," Alex called after her.

She stopped and turned around. "Me too."

And with that, she ran to her car leaving Alex rooted in the same spot confused, frustrated, and most of all, hurt.
