Operation Emily: Stage One

Alex’s POV

Alex walked nervously down the sidewalk to Emily’s house the next day. He slowly made his way to her driveway, stealing a glance at her window before taking a deep breath and walking up to the front door. He knocked three times, knowing at the moment he wasn’t as welcome to just strut right into the familiar home like usual. Soon the door opened and Emily’s young step-mother stood in the doorway, already giving him a sympathetic look.

“Hey Mrs. Collins, may I come in? I really need to talk to Em,” he asked apprehensively.

The young woman sighed and glanced back at the stairwell. “I’m sorry Alex, I was told specifically not to let you in.”

“Please, I need to apologize,” Alex replied.

“I’m sorry Alex, I can’t; she’s so upset,” she said.

Alex’s heart dropped. He felt horrible for putting not only his best friend, but the girl he was in love, in this much pain.

She started to close the door but Alex put a hand on the door. “PLEASE Mrs. Collins, I have to talk to her,” he pleaded.

She hesitated but finally shook her head. “I’m sorry Alex. Give her a couple days to cool off and try talking to her again. It’ll give both of you time so you won’t say anymore things you will regret. Goodbye Alex,” she said closing the door with a snap before he could object further.

Alex’s head dropped and he stuffed his hands in his pockets. He slowly walked back down the pathway and to the sidewalk and stopping to stare up at Emily’s room knowing she was in there. He sighed and placed the first part of his plan to win her back on the grass and looked at the window mouthing “I’m sorry.” He kicked a rock on the sidewalk and made his way slowly back to his house. Once he entered, his mother gave him a sympathetic look and he returned a shake of his head. He made his way up to his room and collapsed onto his bed and quickly fell asleep even though the sun was just starting to set.

Emily’s POV

Emily watched as Alex jogged down the steps of his house and slowly walked the sidewalk towards her house. She watched as he glanced up at her window, right at her, and then walk to the door. She turned down the music playing on her IPod and listened intently to the conversation between her mother and Alex.

“Hey Mrs. Collins, may I come in? I really need to talk to Em,” Alex asked. Emily could hear the nervousness in his voice.

There was a moment’s pause before her step-mom replied, “I’m sorry Alex, I was told specifically not to let you in.”

“Please, I need to apologize,” she heard Alex reply with a slightly stressed tone. Emily felt her heart swell at the tone in his voice.

“I’m sorry Alex, I can’t; she’s so upset,” her step-mom replied with a sympathetic tone.

There was another pause and she could picture Alex’s eyes widen with guilt; at least a part of her hoped he did. She heard a hand hit a door with a soft ‘thump’ and realized Mrs. Collins was probably trying to close the door and Alex stopped it.

“PLEASE Mrs. Collins, I have to talk to her,” he pleaded. Emily almost got off her bed to run down there because of how he said that. Alex Gaskarth did not plead to anyone very often, not like that, and when he did, she knew he really meant it.

Another pause and then her step-mother said, “I’m sorry Alex. Give her a couple days to cool off and try talking to her again. It’ll give both of you time so you won’t say anymore things you will regret. Goodbye Alex,” she said and then the door closed with a snap and there was silence from downstairs.

Emily looked back out the window and saw Alex walking slowly down the driveway, hands in his pockets. He stopped at the sidewalk and bent down, placing something on the ground before looking back at the window and mouthing, “I’m sorry.” Then he walked back down the street to his house with his head down.

Once she saw him enter his house, she ran out the door, flew down the stairs, and walked slowly down the driveway. She saw lights on in the Gaskarth residence, one window causing her gaze to linger for longer than a fraction of a second.

When she reached the spot Alex stood minutes before, she looked down at the ground not really seeing the object. Squatting, she felt the unmistakable touch of a daisy. She smiled and sat cross legged, twirling the stem between her thumb and forefinger of her right hand and looked towards the almost set sun.

‘The little things he does,’ she thought lying back in the grass a grin plastered across her face.
