Falling Dumb Into Desire

New Place, New Hopes

The beige colored curtains rustled in the wind that had taken advantage of the open window and fluttered into the apartment. When it made its way to the middle of the living room where I had been seated on the couch that had not yet been moved to its proper place, it gently caressed my face, cooling me off. I smiled slightly as I closed my eyes, and took the moment to myself as I basked in the brief rest, before I opened my eyes and got back to work.

Standing to my feet, I went to the edge of the couch and then muscled it into place along the far wall. Across from it, Kennedy had already set up the large television that his grandparents had insisted on getting us, though underneath it the wires from the DVD player and video game systems were still jumbled everywhere.

"Kennedy?" I called out. "Kenny baby, where are you?"

"Kitchen." He replied. "Why? Do you need something?"

"No," I mumbled as I made my way toward his voice.

Making my way around the small dining table that was still cluttered with boxes of things waiting to be unpacked, I peaked my head around the corner and into the kitchen, finding Kennedy eating some Goldfish crackers.

"Babe, want to order some take out?" I asked softly.

Unaware that I had been watching him, he jumped slightly and then spun around before he caught sight of me standing in the threshold of the kitchen.

"Oh," he mumbled, his mouth still filled with crackers, "umm ... sure?"

Smiling softly, I continued to watch him.

"At least be somewhat enthused." I told him. "Think about it, our first night in our own place, dinner in bed." I said, giving him a teasing look.

Taking the hint, Kennedy raised an eyebrow, which looked cute with his cheeks stuffed with food.

"What do you want?" I questioned.

"Chinese?"

"Alright," I agreed. "Chinese it is."

Kennedy finished what food he had left in his mouth, and then swallowed it down before brushing his hand off on his shorts.

"Do you have the number?" He asked.

"I took the liberty of stealing the best takeout menus before I left my parents house," I grinned. "They're in that drawer by the fridge."

Kennedy set aside the box of Goldfish and then opened the drawer, finding a stack of different colored papers. Not wanting to sort through them himself, he grabbed the entire pile and then handed them over to me.

"Lazy ass," I mumbled, taking them from him.

"Smarty bitch," he replied with a teasing glint in his eyes.

I opened my mouth to reply with a witty remark, but the doorbell went off, cutting off my thoughts.

"Go open the door, Kenny," I insisted. "If it’s a burglar, you have the strength to fight them off."

"Madison, it's not a burglar." My boyfriend sighed as he set off toward the front door.

I followed behind him, curious as to who would be ringing our doorbell, seeing as how we had just moved in today; no one else knew where we lived. Kennedy quickly made work of the locks and then opened the door.

"Oh," he said, quickly stepping back to allow our visitors inside. "What are you two doing here?"

"Bringing you two dinner," his mom replied as she stepped into my view.

Right behind her, I was surprised to see, was my mom. Giving me a teasing smile, she held up a plate covered in tinfoil. "Fried chicken and mashed potatoes," she announced. "A hell of a lot better than that take out you were about to order." She added with a small wink.

Blushing softly, I did my best to keep the take out menus I held in my hand out of her view. "Mama, you two didn't have to bring us dinner."

"Of course we did," Kennedy's mom insisted, "and plus, we wanted to check out your guys' new place."

"This is nice, sweetheart," my mom commented as she wandered around a bit. "A lot bigger than my first place," she added with a laugh.

I smiled as well, happy that she approved, and then showed her to the dining room. Kennedy followed right behind me, his hand on the small of my back while his mom followed a few steps behind us.

Leaning over, he kissed my cheek quickly before he whispered, "so much for dinner in bed."

Suppressing a smile, I turned to him. "There's always dessert." I whispered back.

A mischievous glint sparked in his eyes and he opened his mouth to say something else. As his mom started up a conversation, though, he seemed to think better of it, and closed his mouth. Grabbing a hold of my hand, he brought it up to his lips and kissed it gently, before helping me into my chair at the dining table. Without another word, he disappeared into the kitchen to gather some plates for us.

I awoke in the middle of the night to find that I lay alone on my queen sized bed. Frowning, I sat up and rubbed the sleep out of my eyes before I got up, tugging the sheets with me. Wrapping them around my naked body, I wandered from our bedroom and then saw that the light was on in the living room.

Following the light, I spotted my boyfriend sitting in the middle of the living room floor, a box of picture frames half unpacked a few feet away, though he was presently preoccupied with the side tables he was putting together. At the edge of the hallway, I leaned against the wall and watched him in silence for a minute or so.

While I stood here, Kennedy sang soft, random songs aloud to himself, and I couldn't help but smile to myself, hearing the sweet sound of his voice.

"You know," I said, making my presence known, "after sex, guys are supposed to produce some sort of chemical, or neurotransmitter that causes them to dislike cuddling, and makes them want to sleep."

Ceasing his handiwork, Kennedy looked over his shoulder and smiled at me.

"You, good sir," I said, making my way toward the couch, "are the number one cuddle buddy after sex, and apparently, you don't get too sleepy afterwards. That's two physiological rules you've broken, Kennedy."

Kennedy smirked softly as he eyed my bare legs, and then he turned his bright, hazel eyes up to mine. "I've never been much for rules." He stated simply.

"What are you doing up, babe?" I asked. "It's nearly four thirty in the morning."

"What are you doing up?" He questioned in return. "When I left, you were sound asleep."

"I rolled over to cuddle with my boyfriend, but instead almost ended up rolling off the edge of the bed because he wasn't there."

Kennedy snickered softly as he picked up a screwdriver, and set back to his work. "Did you really almost fall off the bed?" He asked.

"Well, no," I admitted. "I don't know why I randomly woke up, but then I saw that you weren't there so I got up to come find you."

"You couldn't bother to get dressed before you went out to look for me?"

Raising an eyebrow, I lowered the sheet slightly so that it showed a little bit more of my chest. "Would you rather I have some clothes on?" I questioned.

His eyes lingering on my newly exposed flesh momentarily, Kennedy smiled shyly and shook his head. "No." He replied.

"Say, you never did answer my question." I accused. "What are you doing out here?"

Kennedy sighed softly as he put the finishing piece on the first table, and turned it over, standing it upright. "I couldn't sleep, so I decided to come out here and unpack some more stuff." He said. "I nearly got the entire living room done. All that's left is to hang up pictures and stuff."

Looking around the living room, I finally saw past the piles of boxes and saw that he did indeed put together the rest of the room. Noticing a framed picture sitting in the middle of the coffee table, I couldn't help but smile to myself.

"Where did you get that?" I asked, nodding towards it.

Kennedy followed my gaze, and then he too smiled as soon as he saw it. "My grandparents brought it over when they dropped off the television." He said. "Do you like it?"

Examining the picture of me and him sitting on the porch with Bruiser sprawled tiredly across our laps, I couldn't help but laugh softly as I nodded my head. I waited for a yawn to pass before I asked, "you know what, Kenny baby?"

"Hmm?"

"We made a good looking couple." I stated before yawning once again. "Not to be conceited or anything, but we do."

Kennedy simply smiled in response, before shaking his head. "Sweetheart, get back to bed." He said softly. "I'll be in before long."

Suddenly aware of the sleep trying to overtake my body, I nodded my head and then stood up. "Hurry." I insisted before making my way back to our bedroom. "If you make it back into the room before I fall asleep, I just might let you have your way with me."

A naughty, school boy look sparked in his eyes once again as I passed him, and without warning, he reached up, yanking the sheets away from me.

"Kennedy!" I shrieked, trying to collect the sheets, and cover myself up.

"Get your ass in bed," he smirked, "I'll be in shortly."

"Dick," I mumbled.

"Bitch." He replied.

"I love you." I growled.

Kennedy laughed in amusement as the mischief left his eyes, and was replaced by nothing but love. "I love you too." He smiled. "Now go."

With a smile of my own, I did as I was told. I know that it's only our first night here in our own place, but already I could tell that our future here was going to be great.
