Sometimes Resisting Is Easier Than Giving In
Alex tries and tries to gain the love of Emmeline Steingarten, but she's not interested in being anymore than friends. Their relationship suggests that they are a little more than friends, but she denies that it is. Alex is hurt by her actions and disinterest in him, but hides it and tries to be around her as much as possible, making him seem a bit masochistic.
Emmy isn't waiting to fall in love with him because she's convinced that they would never work as a couple. Her parents are in the middle of a terrible divorce and with that all her hope in love is destroyed. Even though Alex is convinced that she can love him, she wont listen.
