Where's My Happily Ever After?

I'm Afraid Of Your Brain

Jade’s P.O.V.
I wondered how I must look to him. He probably thought I was a hideous whore, skank-face. I felt pretty damn ugly, too. He looked so tortured. Was I that hard to look at? I could only pray he focused on my face, not on my bloated abdomen. My heart was sinking into my stomach as we stepped closer and closer.

And good God, it felt like my child was playing hacky-sack with my heart!

“Quinn, what did you do?” I muttered, trying not to cry.

“I didn’t know he’d come. I just told Nathaniel we were going to the mall,” she whispered, probably lying to me.

“Hey, babe,” Nathaniel greeted her, pulling her close so he could embrace her.

“Hey, honey,” she bid him back, kissing him deeply.

I kept my eyes fixed on Edwin and he stared back, looking as tired as I felt. I wanted to say hi, tell him I loved him, and just hold him once more. But I was too scared. I was so fucking scared.

“Jade,” he choked. His eyes drifted down my figure and he looked a little startled. “Let yourself go?”

“I don’t work out much anymore,” I joked dryly. I gulped as he stared intensely at my tummy. He seemed to be focusing. He dared to step closer, but I stepped back. “Please don’t.”

“Why? Afraid of me?”

“No,” I said softly. I wasn’t afraid of him. No, I was afraid of his brain. He was a smart guy, after all. I didn’t want him to find out. He smirked, I think. It was a sorry excuse for one anyway.

“Then why are you stepping away from me?” he asked quietly. If I had human ears, I wouldn’t have heard him at all.

“Because I’m terrified of your brain.” He gave me a funny look.

“I had almost forgotten how strange you are.”

“I had almost forgotten how insulting you are.”

He tried to smile, but it seemed forced and pained. He looked back down to where my baby was growing.

“So what are you hiding? I can smell it,” he told me, inhaling the air around us.

“I’m not hiding a thing,” I lied, backing away. His eyes narrowed as he focused more. If I had a working heart, I’m sure it would have been jumping like it was on cocaine!

“Jade dear, you got knocked up,” he told me, as if I didn’t know.

“I sure did,” I admitted. He scowled at me, but then I watched as it became painstakingly obvious that he had figured it out.

“Oh my God! It’s mine!

He was staring at me through wide eyes, all signs of weariness gone. I stared back, horrified beyond comprehension.

I just knew Quinn coming over would be a bad idea...
