Midnight Runner

Chapter 1: You. Are the key to my heart.

I woke up slowly to the same room full of bright lights and sick fumes. My head spun and thoughts immediately filled my head I heard people talking and it didn’t sound to good. My mom was talking to the doctor and I could tell either she was crying or was about to. After Dad and Thomas died she hadn’t been the same, she went into a permanent depression and it got so bad that my uncle made me move to Forks to live with him and my mom stayed back in Chicago to try to sort things out.

Why was mom here? Why wasn’t Uncle Mark here? I’m so confused. Somewhat scared. My name is Paige Wilkins I’m 16 years old and I have a rare heart disease that causes me to be short of breath and when my heart gets pumping fast I pass out. And how I get through it all is with a help of my child hood friend Jacob Black. I haven’t seen him yet since I’ve been here nor does he know I’m here.

The pain surged throughout my body and through my heart the doctor rushed over to me feeling my pulse doing different kinds of stuff. “Your fine, your fine just your heart has been pumping fast lately we need to keep an eye on you.” I nodded my head as I laid my head back on the bed. Oh I wished to see Jacob…I missed him so much. I wonder what he looked like now? I wonder if he even remembers me? I wonder if he ever thinks about me like I do? Instantly he filled my head and that meant I had to get out of this bed and see him in La Push.

After a couple days passed I was able to leave the hospital with my uncle and my mom had gone back to Chicago to start her therapy again. As we entered Mark’s house he watched as I sat down at the kitchen table looking out the window. “You ok honey?” He looked at me in question. “No, I just want to see Jacob.” Mark looked at me in confusion, like he had forgotten. “You know, Jacob Black he lives in La Push and his dad is Billy Black.” I was really sad that he didn’t remember my best friend who supported me through everything. “Kiddo I’m kidding I see Billy all the time. Charlie, Billy and I will watch the games together constantly while Jacob hangs out with Charlie’s girl, Bella.

“Bella?” After he said that name I knew that Jacob must have fallen for her. I remembered playing with her sometimes I was the third wheel cause when Jacob was with Bella he would forget about me to the point where I would just leave and he wouldn’t have noticed. I would have never thought about this when I was younger but I had fallen for Jacob ever since the first time I met him. But why? Why someone like him? As I sat there after a couple minutes as I slammed my head on the table. “Ow.” I said with my face still on the table. The doorbell soon rang and Mark went to the door and I could tell he was happy. “Hey.” He said and I looked up to see Billy in the door waving to me. I smiled kindly as I knew Billy would be the only one there but I was nervous just thinking about Jacob. “Hi Billy.” I waved back to him. “How you doing kiddo?” He rolled his chair over to me. “I’m pretty good they say my heart disease is actually getting better gradually.” I said standing up fixing my cloths.

“That’s good hun, I’m glad to hear that.” Billy said as he smiled his corky grin that I remembered before. I walked to the end of the stairs and I didn’t bother looking back at the door cause I know he wasn’t there. I took a step up one stair when I heard the voice I had been longing for. “Where you going Paige?” He paused and continued. “Don’t you want to give me a hug?” I turned around as my frown had turned into a smile that could light the world. He had picked me up twirling me as I hugged him tightly; he had gotten so much taller he was a giant. Billy and Mark chuckled as they left for the living room

We stood in that same position for a little longer. “I missed you so much Jake.” I said as I kept a firm hold around his neck when he chuckled to himself. “Missed you too.” Jacob said putting me down. “You haven’t grown at all, kind of sad really.” He laughed as he measured how much taller he was then me. “Well at least I’m not a giant freak.” I giggled. “True, a giant like me has a lot of problems.” Jacob laughed as we stood there silent and when he looked down at me I turned bright red and turned away.

Two hours passed and we spent the whole time sitting out side talking on how much life had changed and all the memories we had made when we were kids. “Hey, you need to come down to La Push beach on Sunday we are holding a huge bonfire.” Jacob said putting his huge warm around my shoulder. “Alright I have nothing better to do.” I laughed as Billy came out with Uncle Mark we soon waved goodbye as they drove off.

I don’t know when it happened but I knew I had fallen uncontrollably in love with Jacob Black.
