Life on Banana Street

Mitzi's Problem

The next day I got a phone call.

“Hello?”

“Addie?”

“Yeah? Mitzi what’s wrong?”

I could tell she was crying on the other end.

“Jeremy is just fucking up right now.”

“Why? What did he do?”

“I don’t know! I don’t know what the hell is going on!”

“Well…Why is he fucking up?”

“I think he’s cheating on me.”

“Ahem, he can’t do that to you. Not while I’m your friend.”

“Yeah, but I’m not sure though. Because my friend’s have been calling me telling me that they feel sorry for me that he dumped me!”

“Why the hell would they do that?”

“I have no idea. Because he has a friend, Jordan, and she’s a girl and I guess she said to my friends that he broke up with me!”

“Well, just come on over and explain it to me.”

“Ok.”

“Bye, Love ya Mitzi.”

“Love you too.”

She arrived a little while later.

“So, what else happened?”

“Ok, we’re going out and I have no problem with him hanging out with other women as long as he doesn’t do anything. So he was going to hang out with her for a while and I said I was going to hang out with my friends. You know what he says to me?”

“What?”

“He says that I shouldn’t be uptight. Over reactive.”

“What? That makes no sense!”

“Yeah I know! And then I tell him how is that being uptight?”

“And what did he say?”

“He told me that I was jealous of Jordan because he’s never home anymore. And then ‘mysteriously’ she shows up at the restaurant that Jeremy and I were at and of course they went walking, leaving me alone at the table. They come back and he goes to the bathroom. And you know what she says to me?”

“What the fuck did she say to you?”

“She said that me and him were over and that she was his now. So when he came back I asked him what the hell was going on and he said nothing and to quit being over reactive again.”

“I’m sick of all this shit.”

“Yeah really! Tell me about it! It’s happening to me! I just don’t know what to do, Addie!”

She hugged me and comfortingly, I pat her back softly.

“It’s ok, Mitz. I’ll always be here for you.”

Gabe arrived home right after we hugged.

“Hey babe.” He kissed me and he looked at Mitzi. “Hey Mitzi!”

“Hey Gabe! I’m glad you invited me to the party yesterday.”

“Yeah you’re welcome. It’s not like Addie would have ever done that.”

“Of course I would!”

“Yeah ok.”

I shoved his head and gave him a dirty look.

“Ad, you know that dirty look turns me on.”

“No I don’t.”

“You don’t what?”

“I don’t know that.”

“Oh, I thought I told you.”

“No…but Sweetie, there are bigger issues.”

Mitzi grabbed my arm and looked at me with wide eyes, telling me not to tell him.

I nodded.

“What? What happened?”

“Nothing Baby.”

“You just told me there were bigger problems.”

“Yeah there are, but I can’t tell you. Girl stuff.”

“Oh my God, you’re on your period.”

“No! Not THAT kind of girl stuff.”

“Oh, so you’re not on it?”

“No.”

“Ok good. So we can-”

“No.”

“Why not?”

“I’m not in the mood! Shit!”

“Well rawr.”

“Don’t do that to me! You know I hate that!”

He laughed.

“Come on Mitzi, let’s go somewhere else.”

“Alright.”

We were driving in the car, I had no clue where we were going.

She kept crying.

“I don’t know what to do, Addie!”

“It’s ok. It’s ok. It’s gonna be alright.”

“No! No it’s not! It’s never going to be alright anymore! Nothing is the same!”

“It will be.”

“Yeah right. At least you still have a man.”

“What? You broke up with him?”

“Yeah! I wasn’t going to just sit on the other end of the couch while they’re having sex!”

“Ok! Damn!”

She looked out the window only to see the store ‘Jeremy’s Barbeque’ and started crying once again.

“Addie, I’m sorry, but I’m glad you’re putting up with me like this. No one else would, you know.”

“Yeah. Because they’re jackasses.”

She laughed.

“There’s that laugh! I knew you had one in you.”

“Yeah but that one was very rare.”

“Yeah ok.”

I drove to a place I was always comfortable with. Jeff’s house.

“What are we doing at this dork’s house?”

“He’s not a dork. He’s a gonad.”

We laughed again and rand the doorbell, but his mom answered.

“Is Jeff here?”

“Uh no he hasn’t been here in 3 years.”

“Where is he?”

“His new home.”

“Where would that be?”

“Up in Berkeley. Look him up in the phone book. I’m not sure of the address.”

“Alright.”

We got down the porch.

“Do you really want to go to Berkeley?”

“No, not really.”

“Yeah that’s what I thought. Screw Jeff and his asianess.”

I drove me and her back to my apartment. I had a feeling she was going to be staying there for a
while. When we got there, Gabe wasn’t there, but a note saying that there was a note to be found on the refrigerator. Why couldn’t he just write the note on the first one?
I don’t know.

Dear Addie,
I’ve left you. I’m just kidding baby. I left you to go out with the guys for a while. Be back later.
