Sequel: The Truth Hurts Worse

Nobody Puts Baby In The Corner

Chapter 14

They were on the bus, heading to their next stop. Joe, Pete, Luci, and Patrick were still suffering from headaches from the previous night of drinking, so Andy thought it’d be the best time to hook up the Wii and teach Katy how to play Mario Kart. With the volume turned up as loud and as obnoxious as it could get.

Patrick hadn’t spoken a word to Luci since they left the hotel. Though, while he had tried to talk with Katy, she just turned a cold shoulder. That surprised everyone, since she had pretty much fallen in love with Patrick. Patrick didn’t pester her and went to his bunk to lie down.

Not to long after, the other three decided to lie down as well, leaving just Andy and Katy. They got bored with the Wii and put in a movie. Katy had insisted on watching The Nightmare Before Christmas, so that’s what Andy put in. They lounged back on the couch, snacking on licorice and drinking some orange sodas.

“So, Katy, why are you mad at Patrick?” Andy asked. Katy shrugged as she sang along to the song, ‘What’s This?’. Andy took a sip of his soda and waited til Jack saw Santa Claus, knowing the movie would go to the next scene in a moment. “So, did he say something mean to you to make you mad at him?”

Katy shook her head, taking a bite of licorice. “He was mean to mamma.” She replied, offering a bite to her panda. “I don’t like him now.” Andy nodded and sighed. That’s how kid logic can be. Katy hummed along to the music in the movie, taking another bite of licorice as she leaned against Andy. “I like you better, Andy.” Andy smiled a bit and patted her on the head.

“Well, I like you a lot, Katy Bear.” He replied, taking a piece of licorice for himself.

The lights were dark in the venue. Patrick was glad he had this song memorized otherwise it’d be hell trying to read sheet music and play this piano in the dark. He closed his eyes to clear his mind before his fingers touched the keys, playing the first few notes of the song.

How cruel is the golden rule? When the lives we lived are only golden-plated. And I knew that the lights of the city were too heavy for me. Though I carried karats for everyone to see.” He sang, opening his eyes. He looked over to the side of the stage, where he knew Katy and Luci were watching the performance. Though he couldn’t see them, he knew what they were doing. Luci would be texting on her phone, pretending not to pay attention. Katy would be clutching her panda, swaying or bouncing to the music, depending on the sound.

Patrick let out a sigh and continued playing. “And I saw God cry in the reflection of my enemies. And all the lovers with no time for me. And all of the mothers raise their babies. To stay away from me.” Actually, he wondered if Katy was even watching. She’d been giving him the cold shoulder all day. Andy had told Patrick what was going on, and so Patrick tried to talk with the little girl and explain what was going on. She refused to talk to him.

Tongues on the sockets of electric dreams. Where the sewage of youth drowned the spark of my teens. And I knew that the lights of the city were too heavy for me. Though I carried karats for everyone to see.” Patrick’s eyes adjusted to the darkness now and he could see them off stage. The soft lights back stage showed that Luci was watching him, her phone tucked safely in her pocket. Katy was sitting on her lap, clutching her panda while she looked ready to fall asleep. Patrick smiled just a bit, knowing she didn’t get a nap today. She and Andy had a movie marathon of various Disney flicks while the rest of them slept.

Patrick wondered if Katy would even listen to him. Could a four year old understand all that’s going on with this? Would she understand that he was her dad? Would she understand why he hadn’t been around for all those years? Patrick shook himself lightly. He needed to focus more. “And I saw God cry in the reflection of my enemies. And all the lovers with no time for me. And all of the mothers raise their babies. To stay away from me.” He looked back stage again, letting out a soft sigh.

And pray they don't grow up to be...

Maybe he should talk to Luci again.

Short chapter. I was listening to "Golden" nonstop during this chapter. It fit to me. And things are finally looking up. I think. :]
I get to see FOB in a week. So I think the excitement is what has caused me to write a lot again.
