It's Our Last Chance to Feel Again

eleven.

He was in my bloody room.

"Um. Hey," I replied, unsure of what I should be doing or saying. I mean, what on earth does a person do in a situation like this? Start making out? Yeah, right. Although I must say, that idea does seem pretty tempting right now. Did I mention that he was shirtless? Yeah, he was.

"So," He started, his eyes darting around the dark room.

I looked at him expectantly, and when he failed to say anything else, I prompted, "So?"

He remained silent, and I did the same. I kept my eyes cast down, onto the dark floor, all the while feeling his intense gaze on me. I wanted so much to look up, to look back into his dark brown eyes, but I resisted the urge. I didn't need to turn my brain into nothing. Not again.

"Well, this isn't awkward," I muttered to myself.

"I-I know. I didn't really think I'd actually be able to talk to you. I figured Jack would have thrown me out," He shrugged, his eyes unmoving, his gaze still on me.

Keeping my eyes downcast, I frowned, "That doesn't exactly make a lot of sense. Why, um, why would you come if you thought you'd be thrown out?"

"'Cause I'd get to see you."

Cue the melting of my heart. Leave it to me to feel touched by a cheesy line said by some random guy who's stalking me.

I coughed awkwardly, not sure what I should say as a reply. The silence that followed was unbearable. I sat there, looking down at the floor while he continued to stand, looking straight at me. The awkward tension remained in the air for at least a minute, the silence never broken by either of us. The battle on the decision to keep my line of sight towards the floor or to raise it so that I could look at his eyes raged on inside of me, and with my mind too preoccupied with that, I never once tried racking my brain to think of something that would make the situation not as awkward.

"So, I'm Jacob," Stalker Guy, or Jacob, suddenly announced, catching me off guard.

Ignoring the side that was winning, I looked up at him, startled, and oh-so-intelligently asked, "Huh?"

Jacob looked at me blankly, before rubbing the back of his neck, "My name. It's Jacob Black."

"Oh, sorry. Didn't really catch it the first time," I smiled weakly, my eyes avoiding his.

He looked on at me for a good eleven seconds before I finally understood his expectant look.

"Um, I'm Kat," I stopped, and then added, "Hithe. Katherine Hithe."

"Well, Katherine, it's nice to finally be able to talk to you," He laughed, his voice husky.

Mentally slapping and telling myself to pull it together, I gave an embarrassed laugh, "Yeah, sorry about before. I don't really know what happened. I'm just... Not used to being surprised, I guess."

"You seem pretty comfortable right now," He pointed out, and I couldn't help but snort. Great. First I humiliate myself by imitating a fart, now I try and do a pig. Sometimes I really wonder how I never had a boyfriend.

He didn't seem phased by it, however, but gave a throaty laugh before saying, "Yeah, okay. That's a lie, but at least you're not as tensed up as you were before."

I don't know why it happened then, but my conscience decided to flood my mind with images of me promising Uncle Jack I'd stay out of the giants' way. Feeling a little guilty, I lowered my eyes to look at his feet and said, "So um, I kinda promised my Uncle I'd stay away from you guys."

"What? Why?"

He sounded so shocked and hurt that I couldn't help but look into his eyes. When I did, everything that made sense suddenly didn't, and I found myself unable to tear my gaze away from his eyes. Words that were once on the tip of my tongue suddenly mashed together, and it took so much self-restraint to keep myself from jumping on him.

"I-I... I don't know," I stuttered, and it was true. I had no idea why he wanted me to stay away from the giants. Sure, he told me why, but it was so general, and I didn't even know why I said yes to that promise. When Jacob raised an eyebrow, I shrugged, "Well, he said something about Sam's brother having girl issues, and apparently he ran away and it was all horrible timing because a wedding's coming up and... Well, something like that. And recently, he's been pretty upset with Sam, and he said that I should stay away from you guys because my safety's at risk or something of that sort."

Jacob looked at his feet, his eyes unreadable, his face void of emotion. Then he tilted his head up and looking me straight in the eye, asked, "Do you feel threatened or afraid?"

It took me a while to think, but I eventually answered, "Yeah."

His once emotionless face twisted into one of hurt, and I felt the need to explain myself, "Not... Not because of you. I mean, yeah, I'm a little freaked out about you because I'm feeling all these weird things and I barely even know you. But I'm scared because I can't comprehend how you managed to get into my room without making even the slightest noise. And you'd be scared too if you found somme guy that's been stalking you in your room in the middle of the night."

The look of hurt was replaced with a smirk, and as if he had completely ignored the last few sentences, he asked smugly, "You're feeling something about me?"

"I don't even know why I bothered telling you that," I rolled my eyes, resisting the urge to hit myself.

The smile that broke out on his face warmed my heart, and all fear was erased. It suddenly seemed impossible that he was imposing any sort of danger on me.

His grin faded, and his face became void of emotion once again. He coughed awkwardly before asking, "Uh, do you think what you feel is strong enough to um... To accept certain things about me?"

"Wh-What? What do you mean by 'certain things'?"

My question seemed to throw him off guard, and he sat in silence for a while, his eyes downcast. Then he looked back up at me and smiled, "Wanna walk along the beach?"

"Now? Yeah, I don't think so," I told him, aware that I was letting him get away with changing the topic. I was tired, give me a break.

"Why not? The beach looks better at night anyway," He smiled, and remembering the image of the moon's pale reflection on the water's dark surface, I couldn't help but agree.

"Sure, sure. We'll go for a walk," I returned his smile, and he grinned.

He stretched out his hand, and I would have gladly accepted it had it been of a normal temperature, but since it was way too hot, I sharply withdrew my hand and gasped, "Okay, you're reeeally hot."

He smiled cockily and with a smooth voice, said, "So I've been told."

"By who? Your mom?" I quipped before continuing, "But seriously. You should get some rest. Your temperature feels pretty unnatural."

"I'll rest after we walk. Now stop procrastinating and just take my extremely hot hand," He smirked, and I pursed my lips.

Doing as I was told, I took his hand, winced at the heat, and followed him as he climbed out my window and onto the path that led to the beach. My cheeks were flushed from the contact of his skin, and needless to say, I was incredibly thankful that it was dark out.

Both of us kept quiet throughout the walk to the beach. Neither of us felt a need to say anything, and the silence, for once, was welcoming and pleasant. The moment my feet felt the sand underneath them, a smile broke on my face and I inhaled the familiar scent of the salty water. The strong wind continued to blow, and the waves continued to crash onto the shore.

I shivered involuntarily from the cold, and couldn't help but laugh, "You know, my hand's strangely warm."

He grinned and looked at me, "I am so handy."

I raised an eyebrow at him and with a smile shot back, "No, you're cocky."

"And handy," He added, and when I shivered once more, he let go of my hand and wrapped an arm around my waist, pulling me closer to him.

Immediately, my whole body was warm and I couldn't help but smile. The heat felt so good, and I could actually feel my toes when I wiggled them. Of course it took me a while, what with me enjoying the heat, but I eventually remembered something that threw my cheeks on fire.

"Oh god, he's not wearing a shirt," I muttered to myself, and could've sworn I heard him laugh.

Trying to keep myself calm, I took deep breaths in hopes of slowing down my heart that was probably ready to fall out of my chest, and prayed silently that Jacob couldn't hear it's loud pounding.

Heeding the advice my brain was giving me -Suck it up, pansy- I turned my head to face him, "You know, you really should wear a shirt. You're probably ill because you're walking around La Push half naked."

He looked down at me (stupid ridiculous height) and scoffed, "Sure. That's why I'm burning up. Because it's cold."

I glared at him, "Oh yeah, mock the girl who had to wake up at two in the morning because the guy that stalks her sneaks into her room."

Our slow walk came to a sudden stop when Jacob stopped walking and sat on the sand, looking out to the water. With his arm still tightly wrapped around my waist, I fell down along with him, landing on his lap.

"I'm on you," I said, pointing out the obvious. Of course my cheeks were beyond red now. God forbid the embarrassing moments stop.

"I know," was his response, but he made no move to do anything about it. For three minutes, I had half my butt on his lap and my right elbow digging into his right thigh. Talk about awkward, my back was killing me.

"You know what I don't get?" Jacob suddenly said, breaking me out of my silent plea of help.

"No, what?" I asked, trying to remove any hint of pain from my voice.

He looked down at me and laughed, "You don't look comfortable."

Tilting my head up, I tried my best to glare at him, "Just say what you don't get, mister."

"Why you never said anything to me. I mean," He stopped and let go of my waist, and I clambered out only to have him pull me back onto his lap in a more comfortable position this time, "You knew that I was stalking you all along, didn't you?"

I shrugged, "Well, yeah. But wouldn't the rational thing for me to do be to stay away from the stalker?"

He paused for a while before replying, "Then wouldn't the rational thing for you to do be to have kicked me out of your room and not followed me on this walk?"

"I could always go back," I retorted.

"Okay, fine. You win," He gave in, and I couldn't help but swell with pride. Here I was, having a proper conversation with him without my brain failing on me! This called for a nice pat on the back.

We sat in silence for a while more, with me just enjoying the nice wind that wasn't chilling thanks to Jacob, the beautiful view of the dark water and the sound of Jacob's steady heartbeat.

I think I fell asleep at one point, because Jacob whispered in my ear, "Kat, wake up. The sun's rising."

Okay, scratch that. I knew I fell asleep. Groggily, with half open eyes, I mumbled, "I fell asleep on you and you didn't even bring me back?"

"Yeah, well, I happen to like watching the sun rise," He whispered in my ear again, and this time, I sat up, fully awake. His breath tickled my ear, and I shivered.

"So basically, we were out here all night," I stated.

"Yup."

"Okay, Mr Stalker, this is taking it too far," I laughed, turning my head to look at him.

He rolled his eyes, and placing both hands on either side of my head, turned it so that I was looking straight ahead at the sun.

"You know," I started, turning my head only to have it turned back to face the sun by him, "my uncle's gonna flip out when he finds my bed empty."

"Shit," He swore, and suddenly, after a blur of wind and hair slapping my face, I was on his back, being swiftly brought back home.

"What are you doing?" I demanded, my voice bouncing everytime he took a step.

"Bringing you back," He pointed out like as if it were the most obvious thing.

"Yeah, well you just missed the door," I told him smartly.

He chuckled, "I know."

"Okay, so you're obviously not bringing me back. Are you kidnapping me?!"

There was a pause, in which I bet he rolled his eyes, before he replied, "No, I'm bringing you to your window."

"Oh. Right," I laughed nervously, before mentally beating myself up. Oh for goodness sake. I could never just be normal.

"Well," He breathed, letting go of his grip on my legs so that I could slide down, "We're at your window."

I nodded and smiled up at him after getting off, "Thanks. For um, the walk and the ride back."

"Uh, sure. Listen, I'm really glad you decided to go on that walk with me," He started.

"Me too. You were right. The beach looks way better at night," I said, and laughed at his expression.

"But you had fun, right?" He asked, slightly hopefully.

"Sure, sure. There's nothing more fun than sleeping on a complete stranger's lap," I confirmed.

"Not complete," He grinned, and I smiled back. "So I'll, um... I'll see you around," He waved before strutting off, and I couldn't help myself.

I smiled after him and called, "See you!"
