I Could Get Used To This

"Man you are such an idiot!" Brian chuckled down the phone line.

"I know. I know!" I laughed back in return. I was currently sat in my patrol car, parked up waiting to receive a call on where I would need to go. I was also on my coffee break. "I just didn't think!"

We were currently discussing the what had happened over a week ago at the nightclub. After spending the rest of the evening with the girl, Audrey, I didn't even ask for her number! And New York is a big old City. I had more chance of convincing a murdered to turn them self in, than track down Audrey.

"Well man, it's all your fault. She seemed like a really nice chick." Brian added.

I sipped my coffee from it's plastic cup, as I sat in the drivers seat of the car. "Well..There's always plenty more fish in the-"

"Officer Sanders. Your assistance is need at the The Knoll Offices, on 49th Street. There's been reports of a break in. Over."

I put my coffee cup back into it's holder and pulled on my uniform hat. "Gotta go Brian. Talk to you later." I hung up on my cell and tossed it onto the passenger seat.

I quickly brought the car's engine to life and took off towards 49th street with my siren's blaring and light flashing all the way.

"Looks like they totally ransacked the place." I added walking around one of three offices that had been ransacked.

Officer O'Neil rolled his eyes. "No shit." It was fair to say, we never see eye to eye on any situation.

"Has anything been stolen?" I asked the middle-aged manager of the business, Mr. Baldwin, as he passed around and looked at the damage.

"Not that I know of yet. One of our accountants is checking things over now. She shouldn't be too long." He sighed. "We're just lucky these aren't the main offices where serious business is taken care of."

"Sir?" A small voice said from behind me. Gaining most people's attention. "I've checked over everything in the offices and nothing seems to be stolen, just messed up. Some of the books and documents will need to be re-written though."

As I turned, I couldn't help but let a small smile tug at my lips. It was Audrey. Audrey Blaire from the other night in the club. I had to admit, even in her works clothes there was still something pretty attractive about her. I gathered that she remembered me to, as she sent a soft smile my way.

"Thank you for checking it out." Mr. Baldwin replied.

Audrey held the files she was carrying closer to her chest. "I'll make a start on re-writing those documents."

"Audrey your a Godsend!" Her boss laughed. Audrey then excused herself from the room and went to where ever she was going.

Once she was gone, we continued on with our jobs, making sure justice would be served for the breaking and entering within these offices.

Our investigation went on until around 5PM. There was nothing more we could do and we had to allow the offices to be tidied back up in order for their business to continue as usual.

I walked out of the office entrance and down the steps, removing my hat in the process and running a hand over my short brown hair. I stopped just as I was about to get into the patrol car and looked up when I heard the office doors open once again.

Instead of O'Neil walking out, it was Audrey. She was carrying the same files under her arm as she pushed the doors open. As she walked down the steps, she took off her ID badge and put it into black handbag.

She looked up and when her eyes landed on my, her stepping faltered for a moment, as if shocked to see me. But she quickly regained her stepping and came to the bottom of the steps, so she was standing the other side of my car.

"Hey. Thanks for helping out today." She smiled, moving some of her hair out of her face. "You didn't mention you were a cop the other night."

"Yeah..." I rubbed the back on my neck nervously as I leaned on the car. "Most people in this City try not to get associated themselves with cops. So I thought I'd leave that out."

She laughed softly and adjusted her files under her arm. "Well, I better get going. Go all these to re-write." She said, motioning to the files. "I'll uh..see you around." Audrey then turned to walk away.

"Audrey! Wait!" I quickly said, moving around the car, so I was no on the sidewalk. "I know this is weird but uh, could I get your number. Maybe we could get coffee one morning or something?" I bit my lip out of a nervous habit.

She nodded and reached into a bag and pulled out a piece of card, "It's a business card. But it has my cell number on it. Don't ask why we have business cards." She laughed, shaking her head. "Give me a call sometime. See ya." Audrey then turned back around and continued down he side walk, before taking a left at the end of the street and walking out of my view.

I couldn't help but let a grin spread across my face as I played with the card in my hand, that had Audrey's name and contact number, neatly printed across it in black ink.
