Rain

That night at her Uncles’ house, Ellie found herself staring at the rain through the bay window in her room. Her knees were tucked into her chest with her arms wrapped around them, keeping them close. The rain hadn’t stopped. It was still pouring mercilessly. The only time Ellie had ever heard about something about rain like this was in an old book about the Vietnam War. And, well, New York City is nowhere near Vietnam. She highly doubted it rained like this is Louisiana and Mississippi, or even Florida and Washington for that matter.

The door creaked as it opened. Ellie’s gaze remained fixed on a spot through the glass and the rain. She was looking at something intangible- something that didn’t exist. The bed shifted and large, familiar arms wrapped around her waist.

“I’m sorry.” His voice sounded muffled and far-off, like they weren't even in the same room. He put his chin on her shoulder and followed his friend’s gaze. “What are you looking at?” It was even more muffled, and slightly filled with static. He pressed a kiss to the spot where Ellie’s neck met her shoulders. “I’ll always be here for you. Never forget that.”

“But I want to forget,” Ellie mumbled, her gaze still fixed on the intangible. “I want to forget everything that has happened tonight. I want it to be yesterday again.” She turned in his arms so that she was facing him.

He searched her eyes, at a loss for words.

“Make me forget, Mark. Make me forget all the bad. I just want to remember the good.” she said before snaking her arms around his neck and crashing her lips on his in a fiery kiss.
Mark quickly lost himself in the kiss. For years, he had been waiting for Ellie to come back to him. Now that she’s back in his arms, Mark didn’t want to let her go. He held her tenderly and kissed her slowly, but Ellie would have none of it. Ellie wanted to forget everything that had happened, and the only way she knew how was to go fast and hard.

A knock resounded on the door a few hours later. Ellie mumbled a tiny “come in” before snuggling up to Mark’s bare chest. Mark quickly pulled the comforter up to cover their bare bodies.

Kale poked his head in the room. “We scheduled the funeral for tomorrow at two. It’s just a graveside service. Ellie, your dad’s going to be here by twelve.”

“I don’t have a dad,” Ellie mumbled in between yawns.

“Thank you,” Mark responded, cutting off Ellie.

Kale nodded. “Okay, rest up. And Mark? Take care of my niece.”

“Will do, Kale.”

Kale nodded before he quietly shut the door behind him.

“What’s wrong?” Jared asked, taking his life partner into his arms.

“Ellie.”

“Well, that’s to be expected.”

“No, not about that.”

“Oh?”

Kale jerked his head in the direction of Ellie’s door. “She’s going to break his heart again. And it’s not going to be pretty.”

“So…”

“He’s becoming what Adam was to her mother.”

“Oh, I see. Well, let’s go to bed. It’s been a long night.”

“It’ll be even longer. I highly doubt any of us will get any sleep tonight.”

“Ain’t that the truth.”
