I Miss Being Somebody's Baby

I stood anxiously on the wing of the venue’s stage. There were so many people out there; all to watch me. I closed my eyes and stretched my neck, trying to forget my all too vivid dream.

I peeked my head out just a little, enough so that I could see the audience but they couldn’t see me.

“Nervous?” Daisy stood beside me, our hands clasped together.

“A little,” I gave her a little smile before she laughed at me.

“You’ll be brilliant, I’m sure. You always are. Go!” Daisy pushed me onstage as she heard the cue from the techie.

I stumbled a bit, but then started into a smooth walk over to the mic in the middle of the stage. A fiddled a bit with the frets of my guitar before I introduced my first song.

I a lump rose in my throat when I looked back at the techie booth and saw a stranger there; not my Jake.

“So, um, I, ah,” I tried to spit out my words, but they weren’t coming. I smiled foolishly and began to strum on my guitar a bit. “This song,” I started, my voice trembling with each word, “Darling, Can’t You See You’re my Tragedy by To Be Juliet’s Secret,” was all I could manage to say. I didn't have it in my to dedicate it to the boy I loved most.

Darling, I let you in so far, you stole it so well” I began to sing.
But
You can't make it work, so if you
Give it back this time I'll fix us
One more time
Then you can keep
It forever

I watched the time
Tick by for us
And to the sound
Of that we must
Just learn to
Walk away,
The fading glances
That we share
To convince that we
Still care
But we're forced to
Walk away

If I could take you
Home
Just one more time to stop
The clock
And we'll make this
Night never end

Darling, I let
You in so far you stole it so
Well
But you can't make it work,
So if you give it back this time
I'll fix us one more time
Then
You can keep it forever

Our
Fairytale we'll just leave open

For the end we're both still
Hoping
Might just come our
Way
So I wont stop believing this
Time
That the story might say
You'll be mine
And never walk
Away

It's a tragedy that's so
Sad to see
Why can't you
Be
Something more for
Me
There'll be no more
Heartache
Just a heart to
Take
” was all I could manage to sing. My voice was cracking and shaking so much. Come on, Maddie, just one more line, I told myself, “You're too much to take.”

I looked up at the audience. I couldn't tell if they were clapping or not because my vision was disfigured by my tears.

"I miss you," I said to myself, or no one in particular.
