Run

oo1

Her feet slap against the firm, wet, ground. The trees hanging above her step aside to let her twisting body dart between them. Bare roots and cool rocks protrude from the dirt, providing a launch point for her bruised bare feet.

She lets her mind run ahead of her. Nothing's behind her to remember; nothing's behind her to miss. She tore out of the house in a blind panic less than ten minutes before, the congealing liquid on the floor a mark of her- no. She wouldn’t think about what she had left behind. There is nothing. Nothing.

The trees begin to thin, the path turning to the right, and back down the slope it had been climbing, but she runs straight. The trees end and she runs into the light and onto the rocks. Her leaping, twisting, run continues, the long strides leading her to the edge. She leaps.

The wind seems to tear at her mind, she can feel the guilt blowing away with the wind, can see the reasons for her calm motions, can hear her heart thumping in terror.

She had leapt without thought, a cool motion, just another step. But… it hadn’t been. She had leapt past the edge of reason and into insanity. Past the edge of the cliff… and into the end.
