Misery

Chapter Three

She stared at her phone, wondering what to do. Would it be inappropriate for Catherine to call Cam? She sat in her and Adam’s bed in her pajamas, underwear and a tank top, having just woken up. She ran a hand through her red hair and turned her head to look at Adam. He was still sleeping, and Catherine watched his bare chest rise and fall with every breath. He had a small smile on his face and Catherine wondered if he was thinking about her, them.

Probably not.

She pressed ‘send’ and brought her blackberry to her ear. After a few rings, someone picked up.

“Hello?”

“Cam?”

“Yeah. Catherine?”

“Yep,” She said, nodding.

“Well, I honestly didn’t think you’d call,” He told her, and she could tell he was smiling.

“I didn’t either, actually.”

“Well, it has been a week,” He reminded her.

She nodded, although he could not see her.

“Catherine… What’s wrong?”

“Nothing.”

“You wouldn’t have called me if everything was fine.”

She sighed, letting hand fall to Adam’s hair, running her fingers through his smooth, dark brown locks, “I know.”

“Well..?”

“Adam came home a little tipsy, lipstick all over him, and smelling of perfume.”

Cam ‘tisk’d,’ but stayed quiet. Catherine didn’t say anything either and she finally sighed.

“He’s a douche bag.”

“Cam, no he’s not!”

“Yes, he is. Why are you defending him?”

She hung her head, removing her hand from Adam’s hair, “I don’t know.”

“No girl deserves to be treated the way he treats you.”

Catherine smiled a little, and asked seriously, “How are you single?”

He let out a hearty laugh, “I ask myself that all the time.”

“You’re going to make a girl very lucky one day.”

“I could make you a very lucky girl, Catherine.”

She frowned, “You barely know me, Cam.”

“I know enough.”

“Like what?” She asked, getting defensive.

“Like, all you want in life is to be happy, to get married, to be a mom. I’m guessing you’re twenty five, twenty six…”

“Twenty six.”

He smiled, “Twenty six and you’re sick of playing games. You want to know where Adam stands, where the two of you are going.”

She couldn’t help but to laugh.

“Am I on the right track?”

“Unfortunately.”

“I also know you’re a quiet girl and you are the last person you take care of…”

“Cam?” She interrupted. “How do you know all of this?”

“I’m good at reading people.”

“We only met for a few minutes.”

“That’s all I need,” He told her, suggestively cracking a joke.

Catherine laughed loudly; she couldn’t help herself. Adam stirred.

“I have to go.”

“He’s waking up, isn’t he?”

“Bye, mom, love you,” She said, before pressing the ‘end’ button just as Adam opened his eyes and smiled at her.

Her heart fluttered as he stared at her with his deep blue eyes, a smile still on his face.

“Morning,” She said, sliding back into the bed, lying down next to him.

“Hey, baby,” He said gruffly, sleep still in his voice.

He pulled her close, wrapping his arms around her, and Catherine smiled, laying across his chest. He placed a kiss on her neck, running his hands over her midsection, sliding them up her tank top.

“Adam,” She moaned, as his lips found the sensitive skin underneath her ear.

She breathed in deeply, and she froze, catching whiff of the perfume again; the perfume that did not belong to her. She sat up, getting off of him, and he looked at her oddly. She sighed and closed her eyes. He put his hand on her arm, as she turned away from him.

“Where were you last night?”

“Out with the guys and some of their girlfriends…”

“And did one of the guys’ girlfriends give you that?” She asked, pointing to his neck.

He winced and shook his head.

“Adam…” She whispered, near tears. “Why am I not good enough for you?”

He stood from the bed. She had never called him out before, and he didn’t know how to react.

“Cat, don’t,” He told her, his voice raising.

She sighed and stood, too, not being able to stop the tears that fell from her eyes. Adam watched as she shook her head and hopped into the shower.

“Cat…”

“Adam, don’t,” She mocked.

“What is your deal?” He asked

What’s my deal?” She asked, incredulously. “You, Adam. You treat me like shit.”

“Look,” He started.

“No, you listen, Adam,” She seethed, pulling the shower curtain open. “We’ve been together for six years. Six years, Adam, and what do I have to show for it? Nothing.”

He stared at her, eyes wide. She had never yelled at him. Ever.

“Sure,” She laughed cynically. “I have a nice apartment and nice things, but that means shit when I’m forcing myself to stay up until three in the morning when you decide to drunkenly stumble in after fucking some girl.”

Still, he said nothing.

“I cry myself to sleep every night. How fucking cliché, right? But, it’s fucking true.”

“I don’t know what to say, Cat,” He told her, running a hand through his hair.

Catherine gave up on showering and shut the water off, grabbing a towel, “Of course you don’t know what to say. That would require you knowing something, anything about me.”

He shook his head, “What brought this on?”

She stepped out of the tub, wrapping the towel around herself, “How about the past six years, Adam? We started out great. You started out great. What happened?”

Adam watched her as she walked into their bedroom, throwing on a pair of track pants and a sweat shirt. She threw her wet hair into a loose bun. Adam ran a hand over his face, not sure why she had suddenly exploded at him.

“Cat, I’m sorry.”

Her eyes snapped to him.

“I love you,” He told her.

She shook her head, “You know I love you, too.”

He smiled and pulled her into a hug. He leaned down and went to kiss her, but she pulled away.

“Cat?” He questioned.

She shook her head, frowning, “You say you’re sorry and that you love me, but you won’t change, Adam. I bet you’re planning which bar you’re going to go to tonight and what kind of girl you want to hook up with…”

He sighed and pulled her into a hug again. She sighed, too, resting her head on his chest.

“Cam was right.”

“Cam? Who’s Cam?”

She stayed silent.

“Cam Barker, my teammate?”

Catherine snorted out a laugh, “I don’t know any of your teammates.”

He winced.

“He was right though,” She said, looking into his eyes. “Cam said that no girl deserves to be treated the way you treat me.”

Adam watched her grab her car keys and her cell phone before leaving their apartment, slamming the door behind her.

“Who the fuck is Cam?”
