Sequel: Ashes

The Phoenix

He lay there tossing and turning and muttering incomprehensible words as he slept. He had been going at it for a while now. One moment he was sleeping peacefully then before you knew it he was getting jumpy and screaming in his sleep. At the rate he was going, they wouldn't be surprised if he got up and started sleep walking across the room.

Apparently he was having some sort of nightmare. It was scary to look at him; the way he facial expressions changed to mirror what he was feeling in the dreams. It seemed that whatever he was dreaming of was horrible because he had been whimpering for the better part fifteen minutes with an occasional scream piercing the silence. Whatever it was that was happening to him, it was getting worse.

The room was dark and cold and the smell of sex had yet to leave the air. The only light in the room came from the moonlight filtering through the curtains. As the wind blew, a thin beam of light would flick across the walls, occasionally illuminating Jack's face as he lay on the floor.Fallon knew she had to do something and now, with their captor sleeping, was the best time to try anything.

She had been sitting on the floor with her students for awhile when one of them pointed out her cell phone. It was left on top of the long desk where they were sitting before he raped the girls. She debated whether she should go and get it. For her to reach the phone she would have to pass in front of Jack who was still sleeping and muttering the corner.

Mustering all the courage she could, she stood up and took careful steps towards the desk. She felt the eyes of the girls on her and her heart thudded in her chest. Slowly tip-toeing towards her phone she glanced up. It seemed like it was a mile away but Jack was closer. She needed to get past him first. She looked down again making sure she was putting her feet in the right places. Every so often she would look up at Jack to see if he was still sleeping.

Up ahead his large hairy legs sprawled out in front of him, blocking her path. It was too late to turn back now. She could always make up an excuse and say she wanted to sit on a chair or something. Fallon walked up to him and raised her right leg and placed it down on the other side of his outstretched legs. Funny thing he chose that exact moment to let out a small whimper. Her heart was racing and she was breathing hard. She clamped a hand down on her mouth to prevent her from shouting out in fear. From an outsiders point of view it would have looked like she was trying to straddle him.

She closed her eyes waiting for him to wake up, but he didn’t. When her breathing eased a little she turned her body and lifted her left leg over him and placed it down gently next to the right one. She took one last glance at Jack then quickly but quietly made her way to the phone. She needed to hurry.

Fallon snatched the phone from the desk and shoved it down her pocket. She needed to get back as fast as possible. Taking careful steps she returned to where she left Jack. He was still sleeping. Wasting no time she placed one leg over him, then the other and all but ran to where she had left the girls.

They squeaked with happiness as she reached them and she tried to get them to quiet down. It was too late.

“What are you doing?” Jack asked before Fallon could even get a chance to sit down.

She slowly turned towards him her mind going in a million directions.

“Nothing,” Fallon finally replied.

Jack thought for a moment, as if trying to figure out if she was lying. Then he asked, “Why are you standing?”

Oh shit!

“Um, I was,” Fallon started.

She closed her eyes trying to think of a good enough excuse at the same time hoping that the phone wouldn’t chose that exact moment to ring. “Stretching?”

“Stretching?” Jack asked.

“Yeah,” Fallon replied, “my legs were getting numb.”

Jack looked her deeply in the eyes for a moment.

Her heart pounded in her chest as she prayed that he would believe her. Jack just turned away and pulled out his flashlight again. She breathed a sigh of relief and sat down next to the students. They were all shaken by that experience even though they could not hear what was going on. Fallon smiled reassuringly at them. Her next task would be to put the phone on silent. She could not risk it ringing in her pocket.

Fallon shifted so that she was towards the back of the group then pushed her hand in her pocket. Her fingers ghosted over the number pad until she was certain they were above the last key in the left hand corner. Taking a deep breath she pressed and held down the key until she felt the familiar vibration indicating that the phone was now switched to "vibrate". A small sigh escaped her as she realised that she had done it. Now it was on to the next task.

With Jack awake, Fallon couldn’t exactly just call the detective. She thought of sending him a text message but she didn’t know what number to send it to. She could have always looked in her call list but she couldn’t risk pulling out the phone with the chance of Jack seeing it. So far he hadn’t missed the phone.

Then, as luck would have it, her big opportunity came. Jack, being the paranoid creep that he was, suddenly found the urge to go and check the front and back doors to make sure that they were secure. As soon as he was out of earshot, she pulled out the phone and called the detective.

“Hello?” Detective Sullivan answered after the third ring.

“It’s me, Fallon Blackmore,” Fallon whispered in the phone, “he just stepped out of the room. I stole the phone and put it on vibrate.”

“Is everyone alright?” Jimmy asked her.

“Yes,” she told him, “for now anyway.”

“What do you mean by that?” Jimmy asked.

“He, he raped some of the girls,” Fallon sobbed. “He’s a freak. He keeps talking to himself. A while ago he was asleep and he was screaming and whimpering. It was awful.”

“Okay sweetie calm down,” Jimmy said softly.

“Please, please save us!”

The line went dead...

I don't really like this chapter. I promise the next one will be much mucchh better.
It seems my writing has been going off a bit here. I have so many new ideas that just don't seem to fit with this story. Hopefully I will be able to work through this.
Thanks for reading!!! :-)
