Super Avenged

Hard To Get

A group of Mr. Kintsel’s scientists toiled on the revolutionary robot that could quite possibly change the world. The robot, which once it was finished would stand slightly taller than an extremely tall person, lay out on a steel table. The scientists stood in a clotted group around the table, working with sure, quick hands. Only the lower half of the robot was anywhere near finished, with the top half still on the drawing board pretty much. The top half would be the tough part.

One of the scientists glanced up from his work. At the top of one of the walls, there was a thick pane of glass through which a room was just barely visible. The scientist could, however, clearly see Mr. Kintsel, his arms crossed and his face stern, watching them work. Quickly, the scientist went back to work, hoping that Mr. Kintsel hadn’t noticed him looking.

Mr. Kintsel hadn’t noticed the scientist. His mind was elsewhere, on slightly more important things, like the capture of Miya Langston. He still hadn’t received any information about the outcome of the latest kidnapping attempt. This new, revolutionary robot would be nothing without Miya, absolutely nothing.

“Mr. Kintsel, sir?” Dr. Smithis asked tentatively. Mr. Kintsel turned around and walked toward one of the scientists heading the making of the robot.

“Yes, Dr. Smithis?” Mr. Kintsel replied calmly. He unraveled his arms and fiddled with his plain black tie.

“The kidnapping attempt was a failure, sir,” Dr. Smithis continued. “The robot almost had her, but the Super Avenged men dismantled the robot before it could fully kidnap her.”

“Dr. Smithis, you are one of the head scientists,” Mr. Kintsel began calmly. His voice contained elevated levels of malice. “Surely, you are aware of how essential Miya Langston’s brain is to this experiment.”

“Of course, sir.”

“I threatened your life last time, remember? If the robot came back empty-handed, or didn’t come back at all, I threatened to take your life, correct?” Mr. Kintsel continued.

“Yes, sir.”

“And I wouldn’t hesitate to have you killed. You realize that, yes?”

“Of course, Mr. Kintsel.”

“But, I cannot kill you,” Mr. Kintsel said. He turned back around and walked over to the pane of glass. “I need all the scientists I can have. Killing one of the leaders off wouldn’t help me at all. It wouldn’t be strategic of me. Therefore, Dr. Smithis, I’ll refrain from killing you.”

“Thank you, sir,” Dr. Smithis replied. He sounded rather relieved.

“Dr. Smithis, I want you to design an improved robot from the previous one. And this time, I want that robot to come back with Miya Langston.”

“I’ll get on it, sir,” Dr. Smithis said. He quickly left the room.

“Oh, Miya, why must you play so hard to get?” Mr. Kintsel murmured as he focused once again on the scientists toiling at the robot.
