No one ever imagined it happening like this.
Aliens were supposed to find us. They were supposed to attack with powerful ships and destroy everything we had, without mercy.
But now we've found them. We don't know what they are or how they live. They could be intelligent, but they could also be dangerous.
It's been hundreds of years since the Emancipation Proclamation, the death of Hitler, and so many other steps toward human equality. Every last country is civilized and free.
Yet now we find that sentience—and the rights that come with it—may extend beyond our solar system.
