Kristallnacht

It is late 1938, and Albreda's family is among the hunted down Jews of Berlin, Germany. Albreda is kept as innocent as her parents can make her, however. When Ernst vom Rath, a Nazi official, is assassinated on November 7 by Herschel Grynszpan, she goes on with her usual life- the boy she likes, Herman Schmidt, is interested in her. But alas, this is not to be for long. Just two days later, when vom Rath dies from his wounds, the Nazis take rapid revenge in what is later called Kristallnacht. Caught in the middle of this massacre, Albreda escapes narrowly with her life, thanks to her kindly neighbours. But her family are not so lucky. Her parents are killed in one of the fires that sweep Germany, and Hamon, her big brother, is one of the Jewish boys arrested. He is taken to a concentration camp, and she never sees him again. But, on top of this, Herman Schmidt dies that memorable night. Torn by grief, Albreda ends up being one of the 10,000 or so Jewish children relocated to Great Britain in the Kindertransport. But her problems are far from over ...
