Mein Herz ist in Deutschland

Chapter 5

The five people sat in the van, the quiet of night consumed them. A little rustling came from David as he tried to become confertable. Aubrey looked at him and shook her head, closing her eyes again. Quick German exchanged between the two brothers, as David gave out another sigh, sitting up again in the back of the van. Mary looked at him with annoyance. David gave Mary the ‘what?’ look and she sighed, crossing her arms over her chest, shaking her head. Aubrey looked between her two friends and smiled, knowing that she was safe and nothing bad was going to happen to her. The feeling of blending in was coming back to her, but then, as if someone dumped cold water on her, she knew that with her outfit, that would never happen. She went up to put her hands on her face, but then she knew she could not ruin all the hard work Bill had done. Her hands went back into her lap, as she started to pick at her nail polish. The conversation between the two brothers ended and Bill looked over his shoulder,

“We’ll be there soon.” He said, looking at Aubrey. David sat forward, cocking his head over to the side,

“Who is Tokio Hotel, anyway?” He asked.

“Would you like to tell them, Bill?” Tom asked, with a hint of laughter in his voice. Bill sighed and turned completely around in his seat; he got up on his knees and took a deep breath, closing his eyes.

“They are German band, dumbass,” Mary started, “I told the class about them one day, remember and they decided that it was all emo/suicidal music.”

“You’re talking about the band with the really girly sounding front man?” David said. Tom snorted, trying to keep his laughter in, and shook his head. Bill’s face flushed up quickly and he opened his eyes, just to narrow them on David, “What it’s the truth. I mean they are good, but seriously…”

“David, they like the band. Don’t insult them. What if I told you that Gerard Way was nothing but a drunken bastard?” Mary said, poking him in the forehead. Aubrey sighed and looked a Bill with ‘I’m sorry’ written on her face.

“Guys, shut up for once in your life. You guys wanted to go to a German rock concert right; well you’re getting your wish.” Aubrey said, sighing hard,

“Well, what about partying in pubs?” David said sadly,

“That’s tomorrow night,” Tom said. Mary and Aubrey looked at him with wide eyes,

“He was just kidding!” The two girls said together, in horror. Tom turned around, sitting just like his brother,

“So, he wants to party, I want to party. So we are going to party!”

“Hell yes!” David cried, putting his hand in the air for a high five. Tom looked at his hand hesitantly and then hit David’s hand softly. The three Americans looked at the two Germans for a second,

“You’ve never given a high five before, have you?” Mary asked them softly,

“A what?” Bill asked,

“A high five, you know, what I just did to Tom.” David said. The twins shook their head and the Americans laughed.

“Wow, I never thought that nobody ever high five’d.” Mary said almost in shock. Aubrey looked out the window and saw the Ampatheater coming in view, but she heard the screams of Tokio Hotel.

“They have a following,” The dark skinned girl muttered, leaning over David to get a better view.

“Yeah, look at all of those sexy German girls, who probably can’t speak a lick of English!” David grinned. The two girls sighed and shook their head. Aubrey looked at Bill who was putting sunglasses on, and took a deep breath.

“Why are you wearing sunglasses at night? Don’t you think that’s a bit conspicuous?” She said, scratching her hair. Tom turned around, and slid his glasses to his nose,

“To go out there without our glasses would be more conspicuous.” He retorted. The van slowed to a stop at the side of the building and the screams erupted even more.

“Let’s do this.” Bill muttered opening the van door. The loud screech of the female fans almost made the three American’s want to cover their ears, but what made them more confused were the almost inaudible screams of, “Bill” and “Tom!” David, Aubrey, and Mary all climbed out of the van after them.

“Are they talking about that Bill and Tom?” Mary asked, pointing. David shrugged and stuck his hands in his pockets, sighing. Tom and Bill stood next to the flimsy bars holding back the hoards of fans and smiled,

“Hallo! Danke für das Kommen zu unserem Konzert!1” Bill tried to scream over the roar of the crowd, a smile on his face. Mary nudged Aubrey in the stomach,

“What did he just say?” She asked her friend.

“Thanks for coming to the concert, or something along those lines.” Aubrey answered, a bit dumbstruck.

“Tokio Hotel. They are Tokio Hotel, a little small to be a band don’t you think?” David asked.

“I donno. But you must feel like a dumbass saying that about them.” Mary said.

“Nope, he’s probably not lead. I mean look at him, probably guitarist.” He said. Bill turned around and beckoned the group to him. Aubrey’s golden eyes widened as the fans’ eyes turned to her. Her stomach lurched and all she wanted to do is vomit. The fans became quiet, whispering, “Wer ist das? Bill hat eine Freundin? Keine Weise! Das Internet sagte nicht nichts über sie?2” They all pointed and crossed their hands on their chest.

“They think I’m his girlfriend!” Aubrey squeaked, taking deep breaths. Bill looked at her with wide eyes and listened to the crowd, his smile coming back to his face,

“Nein, Nein. Sie ist ein Freund, sie ist alle gerechte Freunde gerecht!3” He said to the crowd.

“Why would they think that you are his girlfriend, anyway?” Mary asked, with a hint of jealously in her voice. David giggled a bit, walking forward,

“Girls.” He muttered, walking next to Tom. Mary sighed and followed suit, but Aubrey found herself unable to move. She was still, and the cold started to get the better of her. Still, she couldn’t move. The fans all looking and pointing at her. Her head went to the ground and she tried to become invisible.

“Aubrey!” Bill called to her, snapping her back to reality. He jogged over to her and grabbed her hand gently, pulling her to where the rest of the people were going, “I can’t leave you! You’re the special guest.”

“I’m the what?” She asked, letting him pull her along like a string,

“You’re the special guest!” He said again, with more excitement.

“I can’t…I can’t do this.” Aubrey whispered, stopping, taking her arm back. The fans took a breath as the feeling of confrontation came on. Her golden eyes looked deeply into his brown ones, “Why…why didn’t you tell us that you were apart of this band.”

“You never asked.” He said, with that same old jokester attitude. She narrowed her eyes and sighed hard,

“They could care less," Aubrey started, talking about her friends, "but I don’t wanna be apart of the tabloids tomorrow. I don’t wanna be known as your one night stand, because that’s all this is gonna be, huh?”

“Whoa?” Bill said, putting his hands up in defense, “This wasn’t going to be a one night stand, Aubrey. I just thought it would be nice you to come and listen to us. I’m not trying to get into your pants; I’m trying to get you to be my friend.”

“Oh yeah right, don’t treat me like I’m stupid.” She nearly spit at him.

“Aubrey, there are so many girls I could have a ‘one-night stand’ with right over there, and you know who I’m talking to? Do you know whose making them wait in the cold, because I’m not going in there unless you go in there too?” He asked, taking both of her hands in his. Aubrey sighed and looked down, feeling stupid and over rational, “Now, come on, please, before they get rowdy and try to kill you for making me sad.” She looked up suddenly and giggled slightly,

“Okay, let’s go.” She said, letting him guide him, “I can’t believe I said that.” Bill giggled and opened the backstage door,

“Looks like I’m a really good influence huh?”

“Oh shut up, porcupine.”
