We're Just Two Men As God Had Made Us

Chapter Twenty Three

STILL Mikey's POV

I didn't know how long I sat there, letting the tears dry on my face, leaving behind a crusty mask of so much pain. I heard so many voices around me.

"... get some rest Mr Way..." Doctor Whassis...

"... I'm so sorry..." Aunt-with-the-small-pox-who-has-recovered.

"... My poor baby!!" Mom.

I just sat there, time making no difference to me. I knew Gerard was there, even though what lay before me was but a ghost of his former self. I knew he could hear me, though. I spoke to him softly at intervals, sometimes singing to him, and whiled the hours away. Listening to the machines bleep, counting how many times my heart broke, over and over again.
