One Shot to Remember

Rescue Me

He was simply amazing. One of my best friends, and still I didn't get what he was trying to say half the time. Though, my favorite part about him, was that he knew exactly what to say, and when to say it. Unlike most people, he could read me like a freshly bought open book. He was great.

Never once, did he ever hurt me. And never once, did he want to. And as far as I know, he still doesn't. He was there for me when my grandma died and is still here for me, to this day, but not as often as he used to be.

He and I, we're still friends, he's just busy. Today, is one of the days when I wish he was still here, but he's off having a life while I don't have one yet.

Outside in Leipzig, Germany, the place I moved to when I was nine years old, it was a normal day. Though, inside my home it was like another sad stormy day.

I was simply lying on my bed staring at the ceiling. Feeling perfectly fine. I was in a dazed state. I sort of have been for the past week. I'm not exactly sure why I'm so out of it, but I am. Maybe still confused that I don't live with my parents anymore.

As I laid there I heard a loud knock on the door. A loud scream escaped my throat and I shot up. The door opened and my best friend Alanza ran in with that 'oh my god she's dead' face she gets allot when we hang out too much.

"What happened?" she exclaimed with wide eyes.

"Nothing," I answered confused.

"Abby!" she yelled. "You scared the shit out of me," she groaned in her heavy German accent.

"Sorry," I smiled.

I walked over to the mirror in my room and stared at my reflection. My brown hair whipped around my face and framed it like it always has. My grey eyes sparkled like nothing had changed. I tilted my head to the side, bored and confused. (As usual)

"Hey, we still go to zoo, right?" Ala asked, impatiently.

"Ja!" I gasped remembering we had made plans for the day.

I ran to my dresser and yanked out a pair of jeans from the drawer and then a shirt from another. I bounded into the bathroom running out only seconds later. Ala stood in the center of my bedroom staring at me like I was insane. She shook her head and walked toward the front door. I ran behind her, grabbing my messenger bag and slipping into a pair of shoes.

Once we reached my front door, we exited and walked down the large flight of stairs to the ground floor. As we did so, I circled my eyes with a light line of black eye liner. Once we got out side Ala pointed to my shirt, with a bored look on her face. I glanced down and blinked.

"What?" I asked, examining my tight, baby blue shirt.

"Nothing," she shook her head. "It's just; you have not worn that in a while."

I shrugged and we both made our way to the zoo, me mapping out what we would see first and what I would eat while we were there. And back I went into the daze. After a short time of me being completely dazed I felt a hand clasp around my wrist and pull me in a different direction.

Alarmed I looked over and Ala was staring at me blinking.

"Don't walk into walls," she shook her head, then placed one of her hands to my forehead. "You feel alright?"

"I feel fine," I sighed. "I was just thinking."

I hadn't even noticed the wall in front of me, and I could feel her disapproving look as she stared at the side of my head, with her blue eyes. Then she pulled me through the gates of the zoo, which I hadn't noticed we were in front of. We walked to a desk to get our random map and other such things.

At the desk I automatically recognized Verrill, another friend of mine. As soon as he saw us he ducked under the desk. A grin broke onto my face and I leaned over the desk and looked down at him. He looked up at me, and gave a nervous smile. That's when I knew why he was hiding. Ala was with me. He had liked her for such a long time. She had no idea.

He stood up and shoved two maps at us and put his hand out, waiting for the money he needed to let us pass into the zoo.

"Gut unterhalten." he muttered in a rush.

I stared stupidly at him, only knowing bits and pieces of the German language.

"Enjoy time," he said.

Ala and I both nodded and she set the money needed into his open hand. Without another thought she flipped her blond hair and walked toward the door. I smiled as Verrill looked down, hiding behind his medium length black hair.

"You'll die," he growled at me, embarrassed.

"Right," I laughed and skipped after Ala.

Once I caught up to her she shoved her cell phone into my hands with a confident look on her face. I stared back confused, and blinked. I looked down at her phone then lifted it to my ear.

"Abby?" his voice asked cutely from the other line.

"Hey!" I exclaimed happy to hear his voice.

I felt like I had just woken up for the first time in twenty years, which is strange because I'm only eighteen.

"How are you?" he asked, obviously smiling.

"I'm fine," I replied. "But what about you?"

"Good. Ala says you've been weird," he informed me concerned.

"No, I'm fine," Ilied iced over the truth a bit.

"Are you sure?" he asked, still not convinced.

"Bill, I'm positive. Don't worry," my heart fluttered as I said his name.

Off to the side Ala looked at me weird. I just glanced at her for a moment with a confused look, before I stared back down at my shoes.

'What's her problem?' I wondered.

"Abby..?" Bill asked.

"Huh?" I mumbled.

"I said; We're coming home soon," he repeated.

"I can't wait," I grinned.

"Me neither," he sounded out of breath.

"Are you okay?" I asked, concerned. My turn.

"Ja, fine!" he replied quickly, sounding embarrassed.

"You sure?" I asked, confused.

"Ja," he laughed a little. "I have to go now. We'll talk soon." he seemed to insist.

"Okay," I laughed.

Without saying anything else he hung up. I moved the phone from my ear and blinked. He always says bye first. With a sigh I pressed end and shoved the phone to Ala. She took her phone and stared at me.

"What?" I asked confused.

"We'll talk about later," she mumbled, then dragged me away toward the birds.

"Geese," I said.

"Penguins," Ala argued.

"Mooses," I countered. I know she loves mooses.

"It's just moose," she blinked.

For the past ten minutes her and I had been sitting there, fighting over which animal was the coolest. So far, she was winning. I suck at this game.

We left the zoo about an hour after we got there, and were now eating in the restaurant across from Ala's apartment building. I've been in Leipzig for nine years, but I still can't believe how amazingly beautiful it is. So anywhere I am, if I can, I stare out the window.

"So, what was it that you wanted to talk about?" I asked her, recalling what she had said.

"Well, I want to ask you something. But not sure how," she mumbled the last part.

"Just ask," I sighed.

"Do you like Bill?" the words poured out of her mouth like water.

I blinked, confused by her question. "What do you mean?"

"Do you like him?" she infisized the word 'like'.

"Uhh, I don't know," I answered. "Why?"

"When you and him talk, you're," she paused, choosing her words carefully. "Different."

"What?"

"When you were talking to him you blush," she pressed.

"I did?" I could feel the heat rise to my face.

She nodded. I put a hand over my mouth and looked down.

Bill and I had always been close, but just as friends. Nothing more. I'd never thought of him as more then my best friend. Just my amazingly gorgeous, sweet, and cute, best friend.

"Nein!" I whispered. "Nein, nein, nein!"

"Okay, okay!" she dismissed. "You know, I should go now. It's getting late."

With a sigh, I nodded and I walked her over to her apartment. After our usual good bye of a simple hug, we parted ways, and I was off to walk home in the dark. Which isn't new. I'm seriously used to it, by now.

After about twenty minutes of walking, I was finally home. I walked up the stairs and stopped in front of my door. A small amount of light poured from under the door. I didn't leave a light on...

I turned the knob; it was unlocked. Confused I walked inside, though I'm almost always confused.

Inside I found nothing close to what I was expecting.

I let out a squeal of excitement and attacked the person who invaded my home in a hug. With an overwhelmed expression he hugged me back. My head rested on his shoulder, my arms tightly around his neck, and my legs around his waist. After a few moments he began to laugh. He spun me around in a circle, and we both fell to the ground.

"Nett, Sie auch zu sehen," he laughed. "Vermissen Sie mich viel?"

"Nein," I mumbled with a small roll of my eyes.

"Let go, bitte?" he laughed.

I let go and he pushed himself up, then pulled me up to my feet. After a moment (of him not letting go of my hands) I glanced up, to see his eyes on me.

"What?" I asked, confused... again.

"Nein, nein, nich," he shook his head, hiding behind his lovely hair.

Subconsciously I moved my hands to his face, moving his hair. "What's wrong?" I asked, breathless.

"Nothing," he mumbled, his face turning a little pink.

Slowly, we became closer and closer, and his lips touched mine. His hands shot up to my face and he pulled me closer. Shaking I wrapped my arms around his neck. I could feel the large amount of heat rush to my face, and my heart rate speed up.

'How did this happen? He and I... Me and him... Is this seriously happening?' my mind rambled as he deepened the kiss.

From the doorway there was a scream. Bill and I both pulled away from each other, and looked toward the door. Tom stood there stareing at us with wide amused eyes. Gustav and Georg appeared behind him with frightened expressions.

"Was?!" they both exclaimed, in unison.

"Sie... Sie ... kamen Sie zu spät," Tom pointed at Bill and I. His head fell and he sighed dragging Georg and Gustav away.

Bill pulled my arms from his neck and laughed a little, looking down. His face was bright pink.

"I should go," he gestured toward the door.

I nodded and blinked. A smile spread across his face. He leaned back in and pressed his lips back to mine roughly. He pulled away, and with a grin he walked to the door.

"Don't forget to lock this," he grinned pointing to the door. "I'll call you tomorrow."

He walked out the door and I stood there blinking. "Bye," he waved back through the door then, really left.

I walked over and closed the door, being sure to lock it. Then, I walked into my room, being sure to turn the light off on my way. I laid down on my bed, just waiting for something. But nothing happened. I didn't wake up, I didn't get a call saying I had just been punk'd. Nothing... Is any of this for real? It must be, 'cause I'm not getting any wake up calls. I realized that I was waiting for the daze to come back.

Good news. It never did.

I'm so telling Alanza about this in the morning.
