‹ Prequel: Where's My Happily Ever After?
Baby, I Think I Love You
Curse Your Blessing!
I heard the front door slam shut, so I stashed my note under the pillow. Jasper ambled into the bedroom slowly, looking only at his feet. I watched as he got down on one knee and took my hand into his. He brought it to his lips and kissed it softly.
“I love you,” he mumbled, glancing up at me. I tugged on his hand, and he stood up.
“I love you, too, but that doesn’t fix everything,” I whispered to him. He sighed.
“I know that. But what am I supposed to think?” he mumbled, pulling me close. “Jade, baby, please tell me the truth.”
“Honey, I just went out with some friends. Quinn and I met up with Emma at Le Pichet. On the way we saw Edwin, so Quinn invited him to join us. She had to go home, though, because Nathaniel called saying Natasha was crying for her. Edwin gave me a ride home. That’s all that happened.”
Yeah, my lying has gotten considerably better. He seemed to buy my bullshit anyway since he smiled at me apologetically.
“I’m really sorry. I thought you were sleeping with him or something. I didn’t mean to freak on you. And, baby, don’t worry about that silly dream; I’m glad that I met you, and I’m sure Quinn is as well.”
I pulled back to look at him, shock written all over my face.
“What?”
“Hmm? Oh, well, I came home earlier when you were sleeping. You were mumbling nonsense, so I was curious. I know you hate when I pry into your dreams, but I couldn’t resist. Temptation got the best of me, and I’m sorry.”
He tried to kiss me, but I jerked away from him. I stumbled for words, but gave up and darted out of the room—and house. I just let my legs carry me where they may, knowing I would never tire. A bridge came into view, and the waves below seemed to be beckoning to me as they crashed against stone.
I pulled myself onto the ledge, watching the not-so-gentle water. I’d be doing a big favor to the world if I just jumped already. I felt my body leaning away from the safety of the bridge, as if it was trying to tell me that was what it wanted. I hadn’t been drinking too much blood s of late, so a nice jump would surely do me in. I took in a deep breath.
“Don’t do it, Jade,” he whispered in my ear softly.
The wind blew through my hair suddenly, and I whipped my head around to see Edwin leaning on the railing. He was standing right beside me, watching the water for a few seconds before turning to me, a stern look on his face.
“Amy wouldn’t want this, and we both know it.”
