Guardian
Ch: 3
I sat across the table from my dad poking at my meatloaf with my fork. It felt rubbery, my dad had definitely over cooked it and my mashed potatoes a little on the soupy side thank god for my dog Mixie. She sat under the table licking the chunks of meat I sneaked to her.
"So how was school?" my dad asked me.
"Good got a new classmate." I said to him.
"Really?" my dad asked.
"Yeah a kid from the underworld." I said.
He was sipping on his soda and spat it out and coughed.
"What?" he asked me.
"Yeah, Solomon not really a bad kid, but he's kind of a nerd." I said.
"Oh." my dad said.
I heard a crash from the basement and Mixie ran from under the table and to the door and whined.
"Must be mom." my dad said.
The closet in my basement was a portal to my mom's firm. I was trying to find a way to use it to my advantage to get me to school. But I had to worry about someone seeing me. I've considered the girls room but that seemed too risky.
My mom pushed the door open and Mixie moved out of the way wagging her tail.
"Matthew did you put the skis in the closet?" my mom asked.
"I'm sorry I thought you took the car." my dad said looking at her.
"Hello Sammy." my mom said and kissed my cheek and then took a seat at the table in front of her semi-warm plate of meatloaf and mashed potatoes. She reached over and kissed my dad's lips and then picked up her fork as he poured her a glass of soda.
"How was school?" my mom asked me.
"Okay." I said to her.
"Sorry, I couldn't help you with that doggie issue." my mom said and picking up her glass of soda.
"It's okay." I said.
"Sammy has a new classmate from the underworld." my dad said.
My mom coughed on her soda.
"What?" she asked and looked at me.
"He's not like those other things from the underworld from the underworld. He's actually kind of dweeby." I said to her.
"Who is she?" she asked.
"His name is Solomon he's a Phoenix not like the bird." I said to her.
A Phoenix, no, no, no you can't deal wit him!" my mom said shaking her head briskly.
"I didn't say I was." I said to her.
"Phoenix's work close with the devil." she said to me.
"Well he's living here wit h his mom." I said.
"Who's his dad?" my mom asked.
"The king of the phoenixes." I muttered under my breath.
"No absolutely not. He's trouble." my mom said.
"He's a nerd." I said.
"Do you know who his first cousin is?" my mom asked.
I looked at her sheepishly.
"He doesn't look bad." I said.
"You can't judge a book by his cover." my mom said.
"She's right." my dad said.
"I know." I said.
"So what else happened at school?" my mom asked.
"There was a gryphon looking for it's hatch-ling." I said.
"You did reason with it right?" my mom asked.
"Y-yes of course I did." I said to her.
"A hatch-ling is worth a lot on the dark market." my mom said.
"I'm going to find it if not it'll be hell to pay." I said.
"Language." my dad said.
"It's true." I said and shrugged.
I looked back at my plate and then back at Mixie she yawned and walked to her bed and lied down. That meant that dinner was over for me.
"Dinner was good dad, I think I'm going to get ready for bed." I said getting up and putting my plate in the sink.
"Okay." my dad said.
I hugged him and kissed my mom on the cheek.
"Did your homework?" my mom asked.
"Yes." I said walking to the stairs.
"Oh, Sammy one more thing." my mom said.
I turned around.
"Yeah?" I asked her.
"Promise me you won't have any dealings with that kid at your school?" my mom asked.
"I promise." I said to her and then went up the stairs.
Okay all I had to do was not associate myself with Solomon.
"Solomon did you do your math homework?" I asked him.
"Yeah it's right here." he said holding it up.
"Can I borrow it please. I forgot to do mine and I'll fail big time!" I said to him.
"Here, what happened?" he asked me handing me the paper.
"I was looking for the gryphon's hatch-ling last night and forgot to do the homework before I went to bed." I said.
"Well look who it is. Solomon and Sammy." Rich said.
"It's Sam." I said to him.
"Hey what's this a love letter?" Skyler asked taking Solomon's homework.
"Hey that's my homework!" Solomon said reaching for it.
Skyler played keep away as Rich and Manuel laughed.
"Give him back his homework." I said to Skyler.
"What are you his girlfriend?" Skyler asked.
I shrunk back.
"No I'm not his girlfriend." I said quietly.
"Sammy's got a boyfriend." Manuel taunted.
"He's not my boyfriend." I said sticking my hand into my pocket and stopping.
"Hey Solomon look what I'm doing to your homework. Oops." Skyler said and started to rip it and it fluttered to the ground.
I furrowed my eyebrows that was like my homework too. The bullies laughed and walked away. Solomon scrapped up his homework sheets.
"I'm sorry they did that to you." I said to Solomon.
He sighed and Solomon ran his hand over the flakes and it was good as new.
"How did you do that?" I asked him.
"Here you go. You can give it back during lunch." he said and grabbed his backpack.
"Hey, you're going to be okay?" I asked him.
He slammed his locker door back.
"Yeah later." he said walking away.
I looked back at his homework sheet and backed at the laughing bullies and decided to make my way to class ASAP.
Thanks to Solomon I got an A for my homework and no mistakes. Sonny was absent that day so normally I would've been sitting by myself but I took a seat across from Solomon. He looked up from swirling his apple sauce for the fourth time with his spork.
"Here's your homework." I said and handed it to him.
"Thanks." he said taking it from me.
"I'm sorry about this morning." I said.
"Don't be I'm used to it." he said.
"You've only been here two days." I said to him.
"Back home, the kids are just as bad. Because I'm a half-ling." he said.
"Wow you really don't have the best of both worlds do you? Why don't you just you know stop them?" I asked him.
"Because of what my mom tells me. Treat others the way you want to be treated." he said.
"Isn't that a little biblical for you?" I asked him.
"It's morals too. Just because people treat me bad doesn't mean I'll have to treat them bad back. Being on earth, I'm learning how not to use my powers to solve my problems even if it's a little degrading." he said to me.
My mom told me something about you." I said to him.
"Not to be around me. We're mortal enemies?" he asked.
"Pretty much." I said to him.
"I understand if you don't want to sit with me anymore." he said looking back at his apple sauce.
"Wow for the devil's cousin your not really that aggressive." I said to him.
"I'm not like my dad or his cousin okay, I'm more mortal than anything. I don't use my powers just because I have them. Only if I know the situation is dangerous." he said to me.
"You said you know a little about guardians." I said.
"We have to study something in school. Guardians are really against the phoenixes and I understand a lot of the things we do aren't moral but some of us can't help it." he said.
"It's in your blood yeah I get that a lot, but one thing. Why the whole nerdy act, I mean you would do a way better job as a goth or something." I said to him.
"I want the full human experience. Anyway, I like my nerdy act." he said and smirked.
I rolled my eyes. "Whatever dude." I said and smiled.
"
