Green Eyes

Kayla’s POV

When I arrived at school, I was immediately thrown to the ground. ‘Maddy,’ I laughed ‘get off!’ She pouted and helped me up. I hugged her, smiling. ‘Kaylie!!!’ someone screamed, and I turned around only to be thrown once more to the ground in a tight hug. Hands wrapped around my eyes as I tried to get up. ‘Guess who?’ someone giggled. I laughed.

‘Hmmm… could it possibly be Brittany Rachael Trowsky?’ I said, ripping the hands off my eyes, only to see an angry Brit. ‘How’d you guess?’ she pouted, and I wrapped my arms around her. Her pout turned to a smile. ‘Yay Kaylie loves me best!’ she shouted, dancing around.

‘How many times have I told you not to call me Kaylie?’ I asked, feigning anger.

‘Awww but it makes you sound so cute!’ she said, grabbing my cheeks and squishing them. I growled. Both Brittany and Maddy cracked up laughing, and I turned away to see Tahnee heading our way.

‘Hey guys’ she said sweetly, and we all took turns in giving her hugs. I turned around to see someone heading our way. Great. Stalker alert. I rolled my eyes and turned around so my back was facing him. Holding my breath, I let out an inaudible sigh when I felt a cold hand tap my shoulder. Frowning slightly, I turned around.

‘Yes Liam?’ I asked impatiently. Don’t get me wrong, I’m a nice person, but after being confronted by him every day for the past 3 years I was kind of getting annoyed.

Liam smiled. ‘I was wondering if you’d like to catch up after school sometime. You know, like a date?’ I turned to my friends for support, only to see them stifling giggles. Yup, they were used to this.

‘Liam you’ve asked me out every day of the past 3 years. You know I’m not interested. Maybe move on to someone else ok?’ I tried to let him down as sweetly as I could. I looked up at him. Great, I’d once again managed to make him upset.
Liam was probably the most attractive guy in school. But he wasn’t popular. Sure, girls flirted with him all the time, but he never seemed interested. You may be wondering why I don’t just give him a shot then? To put it bluntly – Liam was weird. He dressed in old fashioned clothes and kept to himself, often reading during lunch break. He always knew the answer to every question he was asked, which instantly gave him the label of ‘nerd’. But this wasn’t the main thing that kept me denying him. He just gave me bad vibes. I know, stupid excuse right? But I couldn’t help it. There was something about him that drove me away, but I didn’t know what. Ever since that day 13 years ago, I’d learnt to become a very cautious person. It was easy to tell that, much to my disgust, I was the sort of person who seemed to attract trouble everywhere I go. There had been so many cases of me getting in danger, as a result of unexplainable events. So if anything told me to stay away – I’d do it.

‘Kayla are you listening?’ someone asked impatiently, distracting me from my thoughts. I looked up to see Liam looking at me curiously.

‘Huh? Sorry I just zoned out. What were you saying?’ I asked, scratching my head.

Oh crap, here comes that smile. In case you’re wondering, Liam has a very scary yet very dazzling smile. Its almost impossible to not smile back.

‘I was saying that I’m free after school if you want to go to the movies or dinner or something. Please?’

No. I opened my mouth to say it, but the smile on his face distracted me from my thoughts. ‘Sure.’

Wait, what? ‘I..i mean.. ummm’

‘Great I’ll meet you outside after school.’ He smiled and walked off, leaving me kicking myself for agreeing.

I turned around just in time to hear my friends cracking up laughing. I sighed and walked off. ‘Not funny guys. Now what am I going to do?’

Brittany stopped laughing and turned to me. ‘I don’t see why you just don’t give him a shot. I mean, he’s really hot. And he could be nice?’

Tahnee nodded in agreement. I sighed, shook my head and walked off. Maddy caught up to me. Maddy was the only one that knew about my ‘bad vibes’ when it came to Liam.

‘I know honey just give it a shot. Take your cell phone and if you get into trouble I’ll come pick you up ok?’

I smiled and hugged her. ‘Thanks Maddy.’

I wasn’t able to concentrate much during school. I couldn’t help the thought in the back of my mind telling me something bad was going to happen when I went out with Liam.

After class, I reluctantly went out to meet him in the car park outside school. He was waiting outside his car, grinning that smile of his. I slowly walked up to him.

‘Hey Kayla’ he said enthusiastically.

‘Hey. Where are we going?’ I was surprised he could hear me I was talking so quietly.

‘Just to the movies and then maybe to dinner if we’re lucky.’ He opened the door for me to get in.

‘Yeah… lucky’ I said under my breath. He chuckled.

We decided to see Transformers (I know very mature right?). It was going ok until about halfway through the movie when Liam started trying to put his arms around me. At first I shook him off but after a while I gave in, sick of fighting.

It was getting close to the end of the movie when Liam turned me round to face him.

‘What are you doing?’ I asked slowly, but he only chuckled. His lips started coming towards mine and I started trying to lean back, but he grabbed my head and brought it forwards. Our lips met and I clasped my mouth shut so he couldn’t get in. When he finally let me go I stood up, threw the popcorn down at him and started to storm out. I felt disgusted as I walked out, not bothering to look back at him, ignorant to the people watching us in amusement.

‘Kayla, where are you going?’ I just ran faster muttering to myself about how I knew it was a bad idea.

Grabbing my mobile out of my pocket, I angrily dialled Maddy’s number. I swore as it went to message bank. I tried again before giving up. ‘Great, now I’ll have to walk. I knew this whole thing was a bad idea.’

The air was cold outside, and I let out a shiver, wrapping my arms around my body for warmth. It was dark except for the stream of moonlight shining down upon the grass, making it look both eerie and beautiful in a way. I hugged my body tighter and quickened my pace. There were only four more blocks, and I was anxious to get home.

I contemplated cutting through the park to make it quicker, but something told me it wasn’t safe. After tonight, I decided I’d trust my instinct straight away.

I stopped as I heard voices that seemed to be whispering from behind me. I spun around, searching anxiously through the darkness, my eyes fighting to see what had made the sounds. I began to run, my feet padding on the concrete floor, my breathing the only sound my ears could comprehend. Hearing footsteps behind me I turned around, glaring angrily into the blackness that surrounded me.

‘Who’s there?’ I yelled, trying to sound tough, but my voice was cracking from the fear I was feeling. Something cold grabbed my shoulder tightly and I screamed.

I turned around only to come face to face with a pale man with blood red eyes. His eyes. They were the same as they had been on that night, exactly how I remembered them. The hunger and amusement swirling in them was enough to make me weak at the knees with fear.

I tried to run but his hold was so tight I couldn’t get out. I punched his face, causing him to flinch, and I took this as a chance to run. I looked around, weighing up which was the best way to run. I was surrounded. I screamed for help as they each came towards me, smiling deviously, and I could see two pearly white fangs protruding its mouth. The one in front of me let out a laugh, and the rest joined in, their laughter echoing through the stony night. Surely there were people around? Surely people could hear my screams, could hear their laughter, could sense my fear?

Tears began running down my eyes as I likened my fate to that of my brothers 13 years ago. Even Liam was safer than this. I began wishing I’d stayed in the movies, stayed where I was safe. Hell, I’d rather kiss Liam 100 times then experience this.

The largest one stepped towards me and grabbed my shoulders, forcing me towards him. I tried to scream but he clamped his hand over my mouth and I shivered at his touch. He smiled at me and I could see the blood dripping from his teeth.

It was then I realised that I knew what he was. He was the same thing that killed my brother. Vampire
