Green Eyes

26

As the light seeped through my closed eyes, I let out a tired yawn before snuggling further into my blankets. Unable to get myself comfortable enough to sleep once more, I reluctantly opened my eyes, and I was immediately met by a pair of bright blue ones which appeared to be just centimetres away from my face.

Screaming in surprise, I jumped backwards, hitting my head on the wall behind me. Cursing, I turned around to set an icy glare on a guilty-looking Jimmy. ‘Jimmy you idiot!’ I said, and I heard laughter around me.

Looking up, I noticed that all of the others were standing inside the door of my room, looking down at me in amusement. ‘That’s not weird at all’ I muttered sarcastically, pulling my blankets up around me.

I felt someone poking me continuously in the side and I turned to see Jimmy looking at me with a devious smile on his face. ‘Oh, you’re not done are you?’ I said, and Jimmy shook his head.

Pouting, I looked around for a pair of hazel eyes. ‘Matty help me!’ I exclaimed, giving him puppy-dog eyes. Matt walked over, picking Jimmy up of the bed, causing Jimmy to whine and pout at me.

While Matt was carrying Jimmy away in his arms, Jimmy looked up at Matt, wiggling his eyebrows. ‘Why, hello there’ he said seductively, causing me to snort with laughter. Matt scowled and dropped him on the floor, causing me to laugh harder.

Walking away unfased as Jimmy pouted and got off the floor, Matt went to wrap his arms around Kaylee. ‘Next time you do that, it will be off a twenty story building.’

Looking around, it was then that it struck me that Zacky was nowhere to be seen. Raising my eyebrows at the others, I looked around once more, hoping to spot the vibrant green eyes that I loved. ‘Where’s Zacky?’

The others exchanged guilty looks before turning to look at me. Brian cleared his throat, looking down at me. ‘He had to, uh, do something with the, uh, um, car’ he finished, fiddling with his shirt.

Rolling my eyes as the others shot him annoyed glares, I got up off my bed. ‘For someone who can detect lies, you’re not very good at telling them.’

Planning to find Zacky, I walked over to the door, slipping on my shoes first. I looked up to see Matt standing in front of me, arms crossed upon his chest. Frowning, I tried to dodge around him, getting frustrated when I found it quite impossible. Looking up at him through my eyelashes, I smiled sweetly. ‘Matty? Would you mind moving over for a second?’

Matt hesitated slightly, sending glances to the others, before sighing and shaking his head. Frowning, I pouted. ‘Why not?’

Matt looked down at me confidently. ‘Sorry ma’am, but we have been strictly prohibited from allowing you to exit this room.’

Huffing, I glared at him before walking back over to my bed and plonking myself down on it. Looking around the room, I frowned when I saw Johnny, hurt and sadness covering his face. ‘What’s wrong Johnny?’ I asked, my cranky attitude disappearing, replaced by new ones of concern and worry.

Johnny looked at the ground nervously as the others turned to glare at him. Kaylee, sensing the discomfort in the room, walked over to me and pulled me off the bed and over to my closet. ‘We need to get you dressed and ready’ she said, and I looked at her confused.

‘For what?’

Kaylee looked at me, her eyes telling me nothing. ‘What, do you plan on looking like that for the rest of the day?’

Rolling my eyes, I allowed her to pick out an outfit for me, while the others watched in boredom. Picking up the clothes she had set out for me, I turned around to see the watchful stares of everyone else in the room.

‘Uh,’ I said, turning back to Kaylee, ‘How am I supposed to do that?’

Kaylee raised her eyebrow with me, before breathing out with realisation. ‘Everybody out! Maddy you can stay if you like.’

Brian smirked. ‘Aww do we have to?’

Walking over and punching him on the arm, I smirked when he yelped in protest. ‘Out now’ I said, pushing him backwards.

All of the guys left the room, leaving me, Kaylee and Maddy. I looked over at Maddy, bothered by the sad look in her eyes that had been there since she’d become a vampire. Sighing, I told them to turn around, before I quickly changed into the clothes that were laid out.

Grabbing the brush sitting on my counter, I quickly ran it through my hair, not particularly wanting to do anything special with it today.

‘Done.’ I said, and waited for them to turn around. Kaylee nodded in approval, before opening the door, allowing the others to enter.

Jimmy strolled in first, eyeing the others. ‘Zacky’s done’ he said, and Matt hit him on the arm.

‘You idiot!’ he whispered fiercely, and I laughed.

‘You guys really suck at this don’t you?’ I said, laughing. ‘Does that mean I can leave now?’

The others nodded and I smiled before exiting the room. Walking down the stairs, I looked around for Zacky.

‘Zacky? You there?’

I heard rustling in the kitchen so I walked in to see Zacky standing there, looking gorgeous, holding a bunch of roses. Smiling, I walked over to him. Handing me the flowers, he grinned at me sweetly.

‘What’s all this for?’ I asked, a smile on my face.

Zacky took my hand. ‘Well, I thought today I might take you on a date seeing as we haven’t really had one yet.’

Laughing, I nodded, and leaned forward to peck him on the lips. ‘Is that why Johnny’s cranky?’ I asked, and Zacky nodded, frowning.

Sighing, he took my hand and entwined our fingers. ‘Shall we get going?’ he asked, and I smiled and nodded.

‘What have you got planned for today?’ I asked as we walked together outside. He stopped to turn to me, tapping me on the nose. ‘That’s a surprise.’

I pouted but he just chuckled and shook his head, opening the door for me to enter the car.

Getting in the other side, he closed the door and began to drive. ‘Can you at least tell me where we’re going?’ I asked.

He turned to me and smiled, making my heart flutter. ‘You’ll figure it out when we get closer.’ He said, grabbing my hand and holding it.

I frowned. ‘You do know it’s dangerous to drive with one hand?’

He laughed and shook his head. ‘When you’ve been driving as long as I have, I guarantee it isn’t.’

For the rest of the ride we drove in a comfortable silence, keeping our fingers tangled together in between us. I had given up asking where we were going ages ago, and now I was just focusing on the objects passing us by through the window.

The car stopped and I looked out the window, examining my surroundings. ‘The park?’ I asked him, eyebrows raised.

He chuckled and nodded. ‘Sorry it’s not as exciting as I would have hoped. There’s a spot I want to show you here though.’

Smiling and nodding, I got out of the car, breathing in the flowery scent around me. I loved the park; I had always found it relaxing and enjoyable.

Zacky walked around the car and grabbed my hand, entwining our fingers once more. I shivered at his cold touch, and looked up to meet his steady gaze. Zacky grinned. ‘And in case you get bored, I brought these’ he said, removing a packet of Jelly Bellys from his pocket. Gasping, I went to grab them but he just chuckled and pulled them away. ‘I’m offended! I didn’t think you’d get bored this early’ he teased, poking me in the side.

Pulling me by the hand, he took us in a direction I had never been before. ‘It’s just along here’ he said, smiling at me. Swinging our hands and whistling happily, I savoured the feeling of being safe, secure and joyful in his company.

Zacky laughed at me and I turned to frown at him. ‘You’re welcome to join in if you want. You don’t have to be such a Debbie downer.’

Zacky laughed and pecked me on the lips, sending tingles down my body. ‘Well, I’m happier now’ he said, winking at me before turning away.

As we walked on, I couldn’t shake the feeling that we were being watched. Pegging it as me just being paranoid, I sighed and continued to walk along, swinging our hands.

Zacky stopped us outside what appeared to be just a bush, and I raised my eyebrow. ‘A bush?’ I asked, and he laughed and shook his head. Pulling aside the leaves in front of the bush, he pulled me inside, and I crouched down to get in.

‘This is where me and Jimmy used to go all the time when we were bored’ he said, pulling me further. ‘We always said we’d bring our girlfriends here, but that took a lot longer than we expected.’

‘Where are we?’ I asked, unable to identify anything from my surroundings.

‘Honestly? This place was made centuries ago by vampires hiding from church men who hunted them down. It’s basically a tree that’s been broken open and disguised by bushes.’

I nodded, and looking around I began to identify little patches of beautiful flowers as well as drawings on the wall. ‘Do any other vampires come here?’ I asked nervously, looking around me, preparing myself for any unwanted pairs of red eyes.

Zacky shook his head. ‘No one knows about it. Jimmy and I only found it because he pushed me into the bush.’

Laughing, I nodded. Zacky continued to lead me further, only stopping when we appeared outside a tall timber wall, covered in vines. ‘It took us ages to figure out how to get further’ he said, before pushing the wall open.

We walked into there and I gasped at how beautiful it was. I hadn’t expected it to be spectacular, seeing as it was created inside a tree, but the hundreds of little colourful flowers and clay drawings on the wall really made it look good.

There were little patches of soft grass that I assumed were there to be sat on, so I allowed Zacky to lead me over and onto one. Laughing when I saw a scribble on the wall saying ‘Jimmy was here’, I shook my head and sat down on the grass.

We stayed in the hideout for hours, just talking and laughing, keeping our hands together the whole time. I loved being in there; it was so peaceful and relaxing, and being there with Zacky made it so much better.

Zacky looked at me, smiling. ‘Do you want to go for a walk outside now? We can always come back here another day.’

I nodded, pulling myself up of the floor, dragging Zacky with me. Together we headed out through the timber door, making sure to shut it on our way out.

Making sure no one was around, we walked back through the opening, allowing the bush to fall back in place once we were out. Laughing, I pulled Zacky along, swinging our hands and twirling around in joy.

Zacky pulled me closer and squeezed my hand, and I looked up at him, my eyes mirroring his, full of love, affection and lust. Leaning down, he crashed his lips fiercely onto mine, making my heart beat faster and sending shivers through my body. Putting my hand behind his head, I pulled him closer, loving the rush I was getting from being with him.

Pulling away reluctantly to gasp for air, I smiled at Zacky. He leaned forward and placed his lips softly onto my nose, smiling lovingly, before pulling away. ‘I love you’ he whispered, keeping our face just centimetres apart. Smiling, I pecked him on the lips once more.

‘I love you too Zacky.’

We continued to look lovingly into each others eyes when there was a growl behind us. Turning around in fear, I was shocked when my eyes met a pair of furious red ones, a pair of pearly white fangs gleaming at me in the sunlight.

It growled again as I stood there, too shocked to move. ‘No’ I whispered.
